Obama: "Don't Underestimate Our Ability to Screw It Up"

I know I have seen the jaws of victory comment on here-I am just a little surprised Obama made the statement.  He then went onto say Dems need to work for it.

NEW YORK, NY -- At 11:25 pm ET this evening, at the Hammerstein Ballroom, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., thanked Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, John Legend and India Arie for participating in a fund-raising concert benefiting the Obama Victory Fund.

"What a magical evening," Obama said, "which I will not spoil with a long speech."

After speaking for a bit to the crowd about issues, Obama urged his supporters to get to work for his election.

"Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory," Obama said. "Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up."

"I want everybody running scared. Over the next 18 days, other than your family and your job, I want you to make a decision that there is nothing more important than bringing about this change that we need."

  • And they say he never goes against his party!  ;)

It's awkward, but it's true.  Dems do have a habit of messing up what should be a sure thing.  I think a little shame about being perceived as inept can't hurt to put a fire under the party to not to get overconfident and mess it up this time!

  • He's absolutely right.

You know, the other day, when John McCain said "We've got them right where we want them," and quite a few talking heads mocked him, I looked at my H and said, "He's right. He's got the Democrats thinking this thing is all locked up. And because some Democrats believe that, they're probably thinking they can afford to stay home."

I didn't understand why people were laughing at him--he had a very valid point. If Dem voters are complacent, they'll stay home. The GOP voters will show up en masse (maybe the young or first-time voters who may think they don't need to shop up anymore) and viola, we're all left scratching our heads on Nov. 5 wondering what happened.

I'm glad Obama is driving this point home. He said it yesterday in NH and recalled his primary defeat. I'm glad he said it as his fundraiser. Dem voters can't take anything for granted. You'd hope they'd know that after 2000 and 2004, but sometimes, the stupidity of our electorate (yes, even on my side!, lol!) never ceases to amaze me.

  • ...snatch defeat from the jaws of victory,

I love that saying. Rush says it all the time.

  • I really hope Obama continuse to drive this message to his supporters since he is absolutely right.  This is still a close race and it's nowhere near over yet.
  • Who knows what could happen in the next couple of weeks. It is very important that everyone stay alert and get their vote in.
