Anyone want to help plan my housewarming party?

Our guest list has grown rather large (around 40 people) and I am know getting worried.  I am thinking maybe making it an "open house" with a timeframe will let people know they can stop by whenever they choose.  I am thinking after lunch.  How long would you list on the invite?

Also I am thinking of making heavy appetizers and small bite desserts for the guests.  What are some nice make ahead appies that will be easily refilled throughout the party?

Anything else I should be thinking about?  We aren't even unpacked so I have at least a month to plan.  Thank you in advance for the advice!

Re: Anyone want to help plan my housewarming party?

  • With that many people, I would definitely do an open house. If you want to do after lunch I would say 1-4. Some good make ahead apps are salami & cheese rollups, anything in a crockpot - swedish meatballs or cocktail weenies, veggie tray, fruit tray, cheese and cracker plate, etc. Have fun!

  • I'm in the midst of planning a house warming (open house) party!

We are doing heavy apps, hot roast beef, sausage and peppers and pulled bbq chicken with rolls as the entree and a decent dessert table.

Here is my list of apps so far:

    Nuts (mixed)

                    Pretzels

                    Veggie platter w/ dip(s)

                    Cheese /crackers

                    Spinach dip

                    Meatballs (cocktail)

                    Crab Cheese Ball

                    Shrimp Cocktail

                    Bacon dip

                    Onion Dip

                    Chips

  • Open House for sure!
  • i've baked a ham and done a roast and had a carving table.  some assorted bread rolls and nice garnishes and sauces
  • I had an open house in the evening but in order to keep myself out of the kitchen I set up a "feed yourself" area in the dining room.

We had various deli meats and cheeses with homemade buns, different mustards, etc.  Pickle and cheese and cracker trays.  Veggies with dip.  Punch.

I didn't try to do anything fancy - I save that for events with less people. Also needed to keep it to foods which will last for a few hours safely.

  • Thank you all for your help!  I am about to send out invites and am getting nervous but know that with careful planning it will all work out!
  • for ours we ended up doing an open house with no time on it and did a pot luck. We requested no gifts. people were able to come an see the house and hang out in the yard.  I would do apps and keep it simple.
