Dumb Jimmy Johns delivery/tip question

I just ordered Jimmy Johns for lunch. They are delivering. Normally I pay cash & tip $1 or so for delivery.

Today I have no cash, I paid with my card by phone. I didnot have the option to charge a tip on my card.

I have $0.50 in my purse, should I give that as a tip? Or is 50 cents more of an insult?

ETA: My bill was $5.

  • You can add the tip on when you sign the CC receipt, just like you would do in a restaurant.

  • You know, I would probably give him the .50 and explain the situation to him.  Normally I'd say it's kind of insulting, but it sounds like you order somewhat frequently, so maybe next time you can give a little extra (assuming at some point you get the same person), and I guess I'd rather know you thought about it than just stiffed me.

Yup.  I always order online (because I don't hear well on the phone) and just write the tip on the CC receipt.

  • I wouldn't say I order frequently...maybe once every 6-8 weeks. It's usually a different delivery person each time.

I'll add the tip on the receipt, if for some reason I can't then I'll give him the 50 cents.

  • I would probably borrow $1 from a coworker and pay them back on Monday.

  • I bet you can add it on the slip. If not, give $.50 and explain.

  • You guys were right, I was able to add the tip on the receipt.

(to be honest I've never paid for delivery with a cc before)

  • $.50 or $1 seems like an awfully cheap tip for delivery. I always give at least 15%, minimum. Often times this is their only pay, and they have to cover gas.

Then start rifling through desk drawers.  Problem solved!  lol.

I agree.  I don't tip based on total cost (because delivering $5 of food takes the same amount of work as delivering $15 of food), but I have always heard that $3 is the minimum (and I'm in a city so delivery distances are pretty short and gas isn't an issue... I would think in a more spread out area that higher tips would be warranted).

  • I get Jimmy John's about once a week. I always tip $2.25 to even out my order to $10.  I just add it on the receipt.

No, they make near minimum wage.  Second link.  Not sure about the gas part.

  • I work in the service industry and have for over 9 years. A dollar tip on a delivery order is a slap in the face. They are using not only gas, but time to make food AND deliver it to your doorstep. Would you make a sandwich in your kitchen and drive it to my house for $1, because I know I wouldn't! I hate to say it but you are that delivery order they dread going to because they know it will just be a dollar and just like eating out at a restaurant... If you don't have enough money to tip then you shouldn't be eating out, or getting delivery in your case!
  • This is a verrrryyy old thread. I see you're new, so welcome! But it's easier for everyone if you just respond to current threads :)
  • I know when I order pizza and put it on my card when the delivery guy comes I still have to sign the receipt and there is a place on there to add a tip. Hopefully Jimmy Johns operates the same way.
