AW: can we just make this the weekend post?

because AW! we're getting a new car!!! :o)

we've worked out the finances and H's car is a piece of shiz (thanks, saturn!) and keeps having bad things happen to it! it's to the point where we're only about 1k UNDER the bluebook price in repair costs and upkeep this year. i put my foot down and made the budget for it.

so. NEW CAR! and it's gonna be a new new car, not just new to us!! :o

i'm also slightly terrified because this is full on legit adult business, but more excited than anything. we're going for either an Accord or CRV (more than likely the CRV for 4WD in the winter).

  • Awesome!  My best friend just bought a CRV yesterday.  She loves it.  You're right though about it being scary adult stuff.  Ick.   But congrats on not having to put up with endless repair and maintenance anymore!
  • thats awesome!!! congrats!

  • Whoo! Hondas and Toyotas are always a good choice.

My husband drives a Saturn with high mileage and although he hasn't put any money into it recently, he has in the past. While we don't need another car payment until mine is payed off, I worry everyday that something major is gonna happen to it. He swears he will drive it forever bc he loves the car, and we go back and forth and I tell him I bet my car outlasts his by a long shot.

idk. at this point i think we're going to lease for 36 months and then decide whether or not to purchase from there- in large part because if the model ends up having more problems then earlier years, i'm not going to waste X dollars on repairs when i could spend it on another down payment, which ends up normally being 2-3K (same as repairs), which in adult money isn't a whole lot when you know you need it in advance (unlike repairs).

this makes sense, i swear. my mom is going through this with her ford escape- she purchased instead of leasing first, so she didn't get to "try out" the car, so to speak, and now she's REALLY paying for it in repairs plus a giant payment. cars only depreciate in value so purchasing really isn't any kind of super smart money-move IMO, especially because lease payments tend to be less than purchase payments- and you're not paying the bigger payments AND repairs/upkeep once the various warranties expire. by the time you've paid off the car, you need a new one- at least with most american cars made in the past 10 years. :o

So basically, with leasing i'm not sure the fax attack method would work for me, and at this point, i've "purchased" a car from the dealership we'll be visiting, and the lease options right now are something like 2k down at signing with $230/month- first month covered by the down payment.  it'll go up because i'll be upgrading the model and 4WD option. i think my history with lease-to-purchase at this dealership will give me a bit of an edge, and if i purchase, i wont be financing with the car company. plus i'll be doing it at the end of the month, and this IS michigan. we're suffering here nothing is getting better, and the dealerships are feeling it.

$600 under the price, isn't enough for me to get too excited, when i'm sure i could pull that much out considering my good history with the dealership. (i'm cocky i guess. and probably naive. but i'm not afraid of haggling and walking out if i don't get what i think is reasonable.)

and if they direct all of their talking to H, and not me. we walk.  and i'll let their sales manager know before we leave. and then i'll post it all over Yelp, etc. lol i'm such an ass.

First off- WOOT!!! CONGRATS lady!! (No worries, too, it's not THAT much of an "adult" thing. My parents made me buy my own car at 18, kids can- and should- be forced into it ;)

Second, re: the quote.... that's because she bought a Ford Escape.... a CRV will not have any of those issues, really any of the Honda line. And it's not naive to think you can get well below invoice by haggling, at all! Anyone can do it if they have confidence, or even think of it (it amazes me how many people don't think of it. I mean, you can haggle with store managers for ANYTHING- appliances, clothes, tools- you can sure as heck do it for a car)

Also- I walked out of a dealership at 20 when a total douche tried to sell me a car based on the number of vanity mirrors.......... OMFG, I was stabby mad!
