Geeky teacher AW

Yeah, I know...but I have to brag a bit.

My school is involved this year in a digital classroom program through the Young Writers' Project (youngwritersproject.org).  This year those of us who are interested were able to set up private digital classrooms for our students where they could post and comment on each other's writing.  It is password protected, so it isn't open to the public.

Anyway, I brought my kids to the lab today for the first time and showed them how to get on and they wrote their first blog entry--just about what they were excited about and nervous about and what rules they thought we needed for the site.  Then they got to comment on each other's posts.

I have been checking the posts from home and a BUNCH of kids have been reading and commenting on each other's writing from home tonight.  Yup, they are doing homework that wasn't even assigned!  And they are giving each other really good feedback--both saying nice things and giving each other suggestions for improving.  It is awesome!  I can't wait to see what the rest of this year brings!

Okay, done bragging Smile

  • That's awesome!  It sounds like a really cool project.  Why didn't we have projects that neat when we were in school?

  • That's a really cool project and it's great that they seem to be so in to it.

  • That's awesome. I actually pretty jealous that you have access to such awesome technology. How awesome!

  • It's a great way to use technology! I interned in a project similar to that (except it pairs up classes from all over North America with professional writers who also offer feedback). I'm so jealous you get to do this!
  • That sounds really neat. There's nothing better than having something assigned that you actually like to do as a student. I'd be super nervous that the comments would get nasty, but it sounds like your students are handling it really well.

  • The brilliant part is that all of the comments have the kids' names attached to them and they know I read them, so they aren't writing anything nasty.
