I'm visiting New Mexico next week

Hello New Mexico nesties!

I'm normally on the Oklahoma board, but my bf and I will be in New Mexico (Las Cruces) next week for his niece's wedding.  We plan to drive to Santa Fe for a few days and spend some time alone there.  Any recommendations for hotel/restaurants/fun things to do?  I'd appreciate any input!  Thanks!

Re: I'm visiting New Mexico next week

  • What is your price range in Santa Fe? And what type of experience do you want? You can run the gamut form cute local hotel to full resort. Do you want to be in Santa Fe proper, or would you prefer being out in the 'burbs/rural areas?

As for things to do, you can go gallery hopping/shopping. Or go on all the great hikes - this is the perfect time of year to see the aspens changing.  horseback riding down in Cerrillos is a blast....

  • Price isn't really a factor, but I think I would prefer cute local hotels over resorts. I don't know that much about Santa Fe, but I'm guessing we'd prefer to stay in Santa Fe proper?

I like your idea about hiking and seeing the trees changing color.  I bet there's some gorgeous scenery this time of year!  I am so excited!

  • There are three choices for lodging in Santa Fe - stay near the Plaza (procey), stay in the chain motels down Cerrillos (not that charming but cheaper) or stay at one of the B&Bs/resorts out in Tesuque, Pojaque, Cerrillos, etc. A lot of the resorts are actuallu cute and local - Bishops Lodge, Rancho Encantado, etc. It's a question of if you want posh or just a nice place to stay.

We tend to have friends stay at the El Rey (an old Rt 66 motor court on Cerrillos) or teh Santa Fe Motel and Inn or Sage Inn. All local, all a good price, all near the plaza.

For hiking, go up to Hyde State Park. or take a chair lift up to the Santa Fe Ski Basin and hike around teh ski bowl. The aspens are beautiful in Santa Fe right now.  Or drive out to Bandelier for some nice fall hikes.
