Nestie Dust/Prayers

I feel like I'm always asking y'all for nestie dust or prayers for DH but I need them again.  We have just been through so much this past year.

Tuesday night, DH started getting some bad chest pains but was able to take some pain meds and go to sleep.  He decided to stay home from work and I made him call the Dr. Wednesday morning.

Wednesday afternoon I get a phone call, DH is crying, said he is in a lot of pain and the Dr. thinks he has fluid on his heart and wants him to go to the ER and won't let him drive himself.  I fly from Georgetown to Round Rock to get there.  DH is literally moaning in pain the whole way to Round Rock Hospital. From the tests they did, they said it was basically an infection in his lung  causing the sharp pain. The official diagnosis was pleurisy.  The doctor gave him an antibiotic and some pain meds and sent us on our way.

Thursday, DH stayed home all day and seemed to be doing much better. That night, he literally got 1 whole hour of sleep.  That's it.  Friday he went to work for part of the day because he had only 2 hours of sick time left.  I took him for a follow up appt at the Dr. and the Dr. said he seemed to be doing better but could tell he was still hurting so he prescribed him a different pain med.

From the time we left the Dr's office and got to the pharmacy, DH was in excruciating pain.  While we were waiting for his prescription, DH had to get out of the car and walk around.  He finally said we had to get home and get him the pain meds he had.  He was hollering out in pain the whole way home. When we got home, after he got the meds, he was trying to get out of his clothes and get comfortable but was just walking around the apartment, holding his chest and screaming.  I didn't know what to do.  I finally called the DR. back and they said to go back to the ER but DH wouldn't get back in the car because it was too painful so I just called 911 and the EMS took him back to the hospital.

We went back to Round Rock Hospital and had an awful experience last night.  The doctor sucked, couldn't answer any of my questions and basically did nothing.  I asked several questions and the Dr. repeatedly told me "I don't know".  I was like, really, you're a Dr.  And if you really don't know, shouldn't you consult with another Dr.?? He basically sent us home with more pain meds and said sit it out.  I really wanted to tell him that HE could come sit it out and watch DH holler in pain because I could not do that again.  I'm so frustrated.  We're going to call his cardiologist on Monday and go see them but until then, we wait.

Sorry so long. If we could get some dust or prayers that either 1. DH completely recovers and heals this weekend and that the antibiotics work or 2. If that doesn't happen, that he is comfortable all weekend and we can see the Cardiologist on Monday and they gave us answers.  TIA!

  • Lots of thoughts and prayers headed your way.
  • I am so sorry.  I have had pleurisy and it is one of the most painful things I have ever experienced.  It truly feels like you have a knife in your chest.  The bad news is once you have it I think you are more likely to get it again.  I had it the first time at 22, not again until 36, and followed quickly at 38.  Not fun.

The first two times I just went to the doctor, but the last time required a trip to the ER.  I hesitate to tell you this because I am not a doctor and don't know your husband's threshold of pain (mine is considered high).  So, take this with a grain of salt and don't freak out.  I am certain the doctors at the RR ER are just as capable as North Austin Medical.  However, when I went to the ER they were concerned because of my level of pain that I had something more serious than pleurisy.  Their biggest concern was that I could have a clot in my lungs.  I had an EKG, chest xrays as well as a CAT scan.  They also gave me an IV with a pain med (dilaudid, I think) that made me higher than kite and I could not have cared less about the pain.

If it is pleurisy, staying calm is crucial to pain management.  As painful as it might be, breathing slowly and deeply is important to keep fluid from building in the lungs and causing pnemonia.

Why is your husband taking antibiotics?  Pleurisy is a virus and antibiotics will not heal the issue.

In my experience the worst part of it normally last 2-3 days, and back to normal in 10-12.  I hope he feels better soon.

DH also had an EKG, chest xrays, and a CT because of where the pain is, it could have been a lot of different things wrong with him because of all of his other medical problems.  He is taking antibiotics because he also has an infection in his lung that the doctor said looked like it was turning in to pneumonia because of the pleurisy.  We're on day 5 now and the pain is still unbearable with out the pain meds. Thanks for the info.
