Is it a waste to paint your garage?

With a million other projects to do, my DH wants to spend the weekend painting the inside of the garage.  For what?  Do you guys have your garages painted?  I'm thinking it's a waste!

Re: Is it a waste to paint your garage?

  • Ours isn't.

I thought about it doing it and then my MIL pointed out that it's a vicious circle once you start you'll have to keep up on it because as soon as the paint looks dirty in one little corner you'll want to repaint.

It's only a garage. I'm more worried about the inside of my house.

  • I agree!! save yourself the headache!

  • Well I wouldn't call it a priority but if he spends a lot of time there, then it's a nice touch. Eh, it's one weekend and he's doing the work, right? I'd just let it be.

  • Ours is painted from when we did all of the interior and it looks so much nicer. Surprisingly the white hasn't gotten as dirty as I thought it would
  • We're going to paint ours at some point.
  • Not a priority but it's nice to have a fresh coat of paint on the walls. We just used some leftover white paint.
  • Ours is painted to match the interior color. It wouldn't have been my first priority, but I'm glad it's done. Having it painted makes it look so much more finished and I honestly think that finished feel helps encourage me to not just dump stuff in the garage.

Off subject My cat looks exactly like yours. too cute

  • My husband is dead set on painting ours.  I'm fine with it as long as more important things are done first.  I don't want to spend the time and money painting the garage when we need a new garage door opener and a hundred other things more.
  • DH just put up drywall in our garage when that is done it will be painted, probably a med/dark gray.  We dont' use ours as a typical garage though we will be using it for an exercise/rec room and storage.
  • Of course it is painted... actually we just moved and this one needs repainted since the people painted it poorly.  Actually every room in our new place needed repainted and we are about halfway done... next up both bathrooms.... after that, we'd like to get to the garage before winter.  If you leave drywall untreated, it turns nasty (my parent's old house didn't have the garage painted for 30 years and it was not good).

  • Where I live (Las Vegas), I would say that any house under 20 years old has a completely finished garage - textured and painted.  It looks nice, but you are right about maintaining it.  My house in CA did not have a finished garage. Now that I've had it, I don't want to go back.
  • My husband and I recently painted ours!

Quite pricey that garage paint.. but if you dont buy the cheap garage paint it shouldnt have to be repainted for a very long time... to us it wasnt a waste of time... brightens up the place and makes it a much less scary place for us to enter!  :)

Oh and btw.. my husband is a professional painter.. and he approves this message. :)
