THE NOMINATING process this year produced two unusually talented and qualified presidential candidates. There are few public figures we have respected more over the years than Sen. John McCain. Yet it is without ambivalence that we endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president.
Sorry it's not all copied and pasted, but it's two pages....
Re: Whoa - WaPo endorses Obama
Here's my question though. At the beginning of this election cycle, I read at least three articles by columnists saying that it was a requirement to be a journalist to keep their political preferences out of the news. One of them even went so far as to say they didn't vote to remain neutral. Why is it then considered reputable to earn a newspaper's endorsement? Doesn't that just put the newpaper's credentials in reporting unbiased news in question?
And thanks to the Today Show for acknowledging that the WaPo always endorses the Democratic candidate, at least in recent times.
No but because there is a Very Big Wall between the editorial section and the news section. Gene Weingarten has discussed the ethics of this - and of the newspaper biz in general - in his chat from time to time. WaPo is extremely diligent in walking the straight and narrow in those regards. They do not curtail what their writers write because they don't like it, even if it's criticizing the Post.
