So my hubby and I recently had a surprise...I got prego and had a miscarriage at 12 weeks. We are in planning on waiting a couple more years before little ones- how do yall like mirena? Pros/cons?
I was a crazy person on the pill so my doctor doesnt want me on them...plus we are planning on waiting a while. She suggested this, plus I have bad periods too.
Re: mirena Users
Well one of the IUD's has hormones in it, but I'm not familiar with which one.
Also IUD's can make your periods worse i've heard, at least in the beginning.
I've been using spermicide and condoms (plus charting) for the last two years and havn't gotten pregnant. If you use all correctly it is very effective. Look into the book 'Taking charge of your fertility'
I am very sorry for your loss.
I am on Mirena. I go crazy on pills...the hormones make me have suicidal thoughts so I refuse to take them. Mirena is the one that has hormones, however, only beause of the placement, only trace amounts ever enter your blood stream. I also have very bad periods, infact when I got it, I had been bleeding for two months, and continued bleeding for another three. But because of my problems, I don't know if my continued bleeding was from the IUD or not. Placement was painful, and bleeding increased for a few weeks. I also could not exercise without needing to curl up with my good friend the heating pad after for about a month. I was a virgin when I got it inserted though so that could have been atleast some of the placement pain. The physical pain is different on every woman though.
It is said that it can make periods really bad with cramps and heavy flow, atleast for a while, and then could eventually take them away all together while you are on it. I do not think I have noticed any differences based on the fact I have the hormonal IUD. My moods and energy level are about the same. Granted I have only been married for about 65 days, but I still have a strong sex drive...and so far not preggo! Then again, I was still bleeding for half of that time!
DH's mom knows someone who got pregnant with an IUD recently, but that is unlikely...as it is over 99% effecive
If you want one with no hormones, the Paragard IUD is the one made w/o. That one works by wraping the IUD in copper, and the copper creates a hostile environment in the uterus for an egg to implant and grow. No hormones though.
Good luck on your decision.
I've had mine for 2 1/2 years and I love it!
Pros - I don't have to remember to do anything, I have extremely light periods with hardly any pain(a huge contrast to before), it's very effective.
Cons- It was uncomfortable to have it inserted, but it really wasn't as bad as I expected. I've had dental work that was worse than that.
I've had it in for close to 4 years and recommend it to anyone! I've tried just about everything and Mirena is the best in my opinion. It is about as effective as having your tubes tied, you can take it out whenever, you don't have to do anything for 5 years, it's localized hormones-not circulating. I always had a light period, but on this I have the occasional spotting-a few drops every few months and that's all. It was uncomfortable to have inserted, but worth it! After 1 very crampy day, I was back to normal.
Pills made me crazy too (so did Nuva Ring). Mirena does not. My periods are almost non existent. I've had it about 2 yrs and get my period twice a year or so. I do get cramps and bloating about once a month, but no period. I never used to get cramps prior to Mirena.
I would recommend it, but of course everyone is different.
Pros: 99.9% effective, 5 years (or if you want it removed sooner), No pills to forget to take
Cons: First day or two are uncomfortable, DH says he can feel it sometimes but that he doesn't mind
