buying a new mattress

DH and I are looking into buying a new mattress, our first purchase as a married couple!  We think we want memory foam and a pillow top.  We tried a bunch at different prices and we have looked at the reviews.  Every review is mixed.

So if you have gotten a mattress within the last few years, what do you get and what do you think of it?

Thanks for your help!

Re: buying a new mattress

  • The only piece of advice that I can give is that if you a) can afford it and b) have the space for it, spring for the King size!  I really really wanted the king size and DH was insistent upon a Queen, and we really really regret it.  I've made him promise that when we get a house, we get a King sized mattress!

Oh, and we have a pillow top.  I love it.

  • We have a king size latex mattress. Its like memory foam but without the negatives. Memory foam you sink into and it heats up from your body heat, causing you to sink even more. Then when it comes time to get out of bed you are sunk down in it. Latex doesn't heat up and is a lot "greener", yes they are expensive but I would definitely look into them. We love ours!!!
  • Last winter, DH and I went through the mattress purchasing experience and researched things for months.  We initially bought a Simmons Beautyrest Black pillow top firm mattress called the Zarina.  It was wicked firm and we ended up returning it for a Simmons Beautyrest Black Alisanne, which is a plush pillow top. The pillow top is great!

I would suggest you buy it from a furniture store that allows you to return it if you are not 100% satisfied within a couples weeks/months. To be honest, it's the only way to know how you'll feel with it.  We made our best choice based on the what we laid on in the stores, but if we had to stick with our first choice, we'd both be miserable.

I never, ever anticipated spending so much on a mattress, but the furniture place had a steal of an offer so we splurged, and we are soooo happy we did!

     Good luck!

  • we just got a bob-o-pedic memory foam mattress (from bobs discount furniture...not sure if you have one in your area). its a ciris (maybe misspelled) and its plush. the one in the store was much more plushy than the one they delivered, so we're still getting used to it. overall, though, i really like it. might be a bit too firm for us (even though its listed as plush), but DH doesnt complain as much about his back as he used to after getting it and its pretty comfy.

  • Update!  We ordered our bed.

We ended up with a memory foam mattress with a pillow top.  Mel, thanks for the advice on the king, but our room would be a little to tight with one.  And we have no problems sleeping in our queen now.  Maybe someday!

We should have the bed by this weekend!
