DD complaining of feet hurting at night....

We will call the doc on this one too, but I just wanted to see if anyone else experienced this. DD is 3 years old and at night she complains that the insides of her feet hurt- achey-somtimes to the point of crying about it. I asked the doctor at our last visit- the pains were less frequent but now the complaints have been daily for a few days. We thought it was growing pains and he said it could be because she walked fine. Anyone experience this?

Re: DD complaining of feet hurting at night....

  • Could it be cramping?

  • I'm wondering if that is it- only really a nighttime thing

  • the charlie horse thing is usually only night time....try bananas...they are caused supposed to help...also make sure she is hydrated

  • I know you said feet... but does she tend to walk around on her toes/balls of her feet a lot? My niece (who is now 8) used to walk on her toes all the time, and it turned out to be that she had an extra tight achilles tendon which made it painful for her to walk normally. She would sometimes complain of cramping in her calves and feet. Just something to watch for.
  • Hi, I'm a lurker, but I thought I would comment based off of my personal experience. I have had flat feet since I was a child, and my pediatrician always told my parents not to worry about it. Now that I am an adult, I have major feet problems. I am not overweight or anything, and my feet kill me all the time, I cannot wear heals whatsoever, and even flats are difficult because they offer no support. My dad has flat feet and we both have to go to a podiatrist, so I inherited it. I would take her to a podiatrist. She may not have problems walking now because she only weighs about 30 lbs (give or take) and is not heavy enough to show visible over-pronation. But save her a lifetime of ugly shoes and foot pain by getting it checked out early. I know I will definitely taking my future children just to make sure at a very early age.
  • DS goes through this occasionally.  For like 4 months straight, the only way he would go to sleep was if I rubbed his feet for 30 minutes.  I got SOOOOO sick of it, but it never seemed to bother him during the day, just at night after a long day of playing and running around.  So I sucked it up and rubbed his feet (and sometimes his legs hurt too) and it never got worse so we never went to the doc.

Good luck.  I attribute it to growing pains but who knows.  The only other thought I have is could her shoes be bothering her?  Does she need more arch support, etc?

  • DD had tendonitis and it hurt her wose in the morning when she woke up.  I'm not sure why, but that was one of the questions the doctor asked (bone spurs also hurt more in the am).

I'd take her to her pedi.  Mine told DD to take a week off of ballet and gymnastics (she also got a note for gym for one week).  The doc said she just needs to rest and it will heal with time.

  • Sounds like plantar fasciitis. Of course I am no doctor and could be way off, but I have flare ups from time to time and the symptoms sound similar. Poor thing, it can be very painful. Massaging the bottoms her feet should relieve the pain temporarily.

You can try having her use one of these:

     http://www.rei.com/product/706082

It's designed for plantar's but I like to use it after a long day on my feet.  Dh has problems with his arches and this also helps relieves his pain.

It's only $5 and she could do it herself.

  • Hello, just a lurker here, but my daughter used to go thru the same things.  She is 11 now but she had major "growing pains" growing up.  her feet would hurt or her knees, legs, etc.  Mainly at night.

Something about being on them all day, then at night they start to relax and hurt.

Massaging always helped.  The doctors said she would grow out of it also and for the most part she has.  She just grew very fast and her body was aching because of it.  She wears a size 10 shoe and is 5'4" at 11 years old.

I know this doesnt help much..but Ibuprofen would work when it got really painful.

  • Is it her arches that hurt? If so maybe her shoes don't have enough arch support for her feet.

  • My daughter had that wasnt cramping but pedi said it was due to the way she walked and the stress it puts on the feet.. Oh and when we actually bought her larger shoes she complained a lot less ( I forgot how fast her little feet were growing....)
