Birth Control Switch?

Can anyone tell me if it's ok to switch to a different birth control in the middle of the month?

I've had terrible mood swings since I started taking this one and I want to switch to a lower dose to see if that helps. My doctor wrote me a prescription for it but she's out of town so I can't call her and ask. I walk around feeling depressed and emotionally unattached, especially when it comes to sex. I want to have sex. The sex is amazing! But getting to that point of actually doing it is such a task!

I read on here that it may be because of the brand and maybe I should switch to a more expensive bc? Anyone have any advice? I really want to be myself again!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Birth Control Switch?

  • It is reccomended that you switch only after the first day of your period has begun. Usually they tell you to start on a sunday so you remember to switch packs etc. It leads to less break through bleeding.

Can't help you on the sex drive thing. Sorry.

  • Can you call the doctors office and get a nurse?

My doctor and pharmacist just told me that it was okay if i did this for the same reasons, the mail order pharmacy screwed the order up and sent me generic and it made me BSC so i was told that i could start a new pack whenever i got the new order. But i would ask your pharmacist or call the doctors office and get a nurse.

  • If you want to go ahead and stop the one your on, you need to stop taking it, let your period start, then start the new one.  You can throw yourself into major side effects by switching without a period between.

THIS!  You need to give your body a little time adjust, and flush out the one that is not working for you. You can stop this one whenever you want, but I would not start the new one until your period starts.

  • Thank you ladies! I really appreciate it.
  • i switched a few different medications is the past 8 years.... my favorite was the ring...

i would recommend waiting til the meds you have noe are done. wait til your period ends to begin a new one.

when it comes to sex... i know thats where i had a problem.

i think my meds actually got me a little depressed and I really didn't have any sex drive. now that im off the meds, im really into having sex. i think its BC that makes our bodys change like that~ at least a few of us.

  • My husband I and have been married for a little over two years and have struggled with my lack of sex-drive.  I asked my doctor at my last OBGYN appointment if the pill causes a dive in sex-drive.  She claimed that most women don't have that side effect.  However, after MUCH research, I have found the complete opposite.  We finally decided for me to go off the pill and see if it changed things (we were really at rock bottom as far as our sex life and didn't know what else to do as the rest of our relationship is very healthy) and at a week today being off the pill, I can honestly say that it has done a complete 180 to our sex life.  Within just a couple days, I could tell a difference in how quickly I'm turned on and my daily attraction to my hubby.  Plus I was having pain during sex and that is gone.  I was considering what you are...trying another pill...but I just don't know if I can risk it now that things are so much better.  (We are using condoms as our form of birth control.) I have been researching and it seems that even when people try other pills they have the same negative effects on their sex drive.  We've decided that having a good sex life at this point in our lives is much more important to us than a small chance of having a child.  If it happens, we know it's in God's hands and in His timing.  Wish you the best!
  • You should try the Nuvaring!  It is great.  I switched to it after being on the patch, which gave me horrible mood swings & PMS!  Don't switch to a new birth control in the middle of your cycle and don't just stop taking the pills, unless you want to risk becoming pregnant.
  • I would just ask the pharmacist where your prescription is being filled; they will definitely know!
