This weekend, I was at the mall picking up a couple of things. I stopped at the McD's in the food court to get a Diet Coke.
There was a lady in front of me putting in her order. She dropped a five dollar bill, but she had two kids with her and she was too busy to notice. I picked it up and handed it to her. She thanked me and made a little joke about thinking she had more money.
As I was paying for my order, she slid the five over to the cashier. Slow on the uptake, I was wondering why she was giving more money to the cashier. It then dawned on me that she was paying for my soda.
I thanked her, she thanked me, there was a whole lot of thanking going on. The woman behind me then said how wonderful it was to see what both of us had just done.
So, it left me thinking, is society really that jacked up that handing somebody their money is considered a good deed? Don't get me wrong. I was happy that I got a free soda out of the deal, but it made me sort of sad.
Pointless story brought to you by a Diet Coke addict. Any randoms you want to share?
Re: Random story about this weekend
Interesting story, though I'd rather hear more about what's going on with your house and stuff.
Nothing random, but I did have a fantastic weekend. Is it a coincidence that my husband was out of town? I hope so.

I think I might have looked at the lady funny for trying to buy my soda to reward me for picking up something she dropped. I mean, it was a very nice gesture for you helping her out but so unnecessary. You should have slapped her across the face for pointing out what a depressing place the world has become.
I watched the Princess and The Frog this weekend and was extremely disappointed. It could have been a way better movie than it was. And even though I think Disney gets a ton of flak over stupid little things, I'm scratching my head at them over this movie because the moral pretty much came across "Screw working hard to get what you want. All that's important is finding a man to marry you."

I think it's sweet. i am not sure why you think it's weird.
I think people have always done little gestures like that. like people who pay the toll for the person behind them, etc.
I mean, she wanted to express thanks. That was the easiest thing at the time to do. Maybe if it was at a store, she would have let you in front of her in line or passed you a hard to reach item from the shelf.
Edited- and now I just realized I read your post wrong. i thought you were saying she was crappy for paying for your soda.
Nevermind.
It's too bad people seem to expect people to ignore each other, rather than help out. Yay for free soda, though.
Saturday night I made the best dinner ever. I still salivate when I think of it.

I never question a free soda. Or free anything. Never look a gift horse in the mouth, or something like that.
It was a very nice gesture though. I do think that, in general, people are so inconsiderate to one another. I was standing on the PATH this morning and apparently the guy next to me was blocking a woman's way out of the train. Instead of being nice and asking him to move, she yelled "EXCUSE ME!!!! PEOPLE HAVE TO GET OFF THE TRAIN!!!!" Really? Was that necessary? Couldn't you have accomplished your objective while still being pleasant? It's funny because nobody even so much as side-eyed her behavior, like that's how it's supposed to be. I guess we've just come to expect being abused on a daily basis.
What'd you make Kay?
It was a small dinner party for my husband's birthday. He wanted shrimp cocktail, red meat, mashed potatoes, a grilled vegetable, and ice cream.
I convinced him to let me do something different with the potatoes, so I made this potato gratin. I ordered an Angus beef tenderloin from my butcher that absolutely spectacular (and expensive). I made a horseradish cream that was essentially whipped cream with horseradish, then grilled some asparagus and bought Ben & Jerry's for dessert.
It was ridiculously easy, but everything was really, really good. We topped it off with a selection of single malts.

Oh no, I certainly thought it was really nice. It's just sad that more people expect strangers to scream at each other rather than help them out (good example, November).
Well, since you asked Lisa, inspections have been really good on both our sale and purchase. Both of the appraisals have come back good. Now we just play the waiting game for the next two weeks (less actually, closings both scheduled for next Thursday). It has been freakishly quiet in terms of hearing from our loan officer, so I am scared that next week, all hell will break loose and we will end up homeless. Yes, I am a glass half empty kind of girl.
Vinny, that is fantastic news! The biggest worry for us was the appraisals since banks are being super cautious, so the fact you've already got that taken care of means you're out of the woods.
Are you going to move yourselves or did you hire movers?

Kay, that sounds delish. My H adores (and that's not a strong enough word, actually) potatoes au gratin, so I may have to try that recipe for him.
Vinny - Good luck on finishing the home selling/buying process!
Thanks!
I was pretty sure our condo appraisal would come back fine, but I was worried about the house.
We are getting a POD and loading it up ourselves. My H has a handful of buddies that he has helped move in the recent past, so he is calling in the obligatory pay-backs to help with the heavy stuff. So, I will most likely be on Andy duty for the majority of the move. I can handle that.
Has anyone seen that commerical..I think it's from Liberty Mutual. It says something like "When people do something right, it's called being responsible. When a bank does..blahblahicantrememberblah"?
There is a lady who stops a guy before he walks into the street, a lady who kicks a basketball back to some kids and a bunch of other things.
The commerical makes me cry. Every single time. It's just touching to see people do something nice. Even if it's on tv.
My job makes me think everyone is a jerk and I rarely remember that there are nice people in the world.

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
