Sweet 16

Andy's neice was telling me all about the plans for her sweet 16 party that she is planning

1.   they've ordered party stuff from California and Ohio

2.  She's kept awake at night with anxiety over her "to do" list

3.   There are 70 people invited

4.   The guest MUST wear black and white.  She is wearing a hot pink sequened number.

5.  A DJ has been hired

I hope this is a trend that ends by the time Lila is 15.

Re: Sweet 16

  • is her party being featured on MTV?
  • If they haven't been contacted by the bride...I mean birthday girl...I'd be very surprised.

  • It's awful that stupid show caused more entitled birthday party behavior.  I'm afeared it's the same thing with Teen Mom.

  • I haven't actually heard of anyone having a 'sweet sixteen' IRL only on TV. Take pictures and report back.

I had a surprise "sweet sixteen" party, but it was comprised of my parents clearing all of the furniture out of the front two rooms of the house for dancing and "hiring" one of my friends to dj. It was actually one of the coolest things my parents ever did. I should have gotten mad that they didn't give me a car though.

  • Did she show you the sweet Range Rover she's expecting to get as a gift from mom and dad?

I did not get a sweet sixteen party, but I did get a Bat Mitzvah.  That was awesome.

  • My mom let me ditch school on my 16th birthday so that I could go get my driver's license.  That is about the sweetest 16th I could imagine.  I assume Andy, and all future children, will have similar birthdays.

  • Based on the photos I see around here of birthday parties for small children, I'm not optimistic that things will be better by the time our kids are teenagers.

It's like some women have this need to do their weddings over and over via their children.

ETA by "around here" I just mean on the nest/bump. I don't think I have seen any kiddie extravaganzas thrown around here.

  • My mom was on vacation with one of her friends when I turned 16. She did order flowers to be delivered to me, which was very sweet....except the florist got orders confused and delivered a sympathy funeral wreath to me instead.

My dad let me have a big party but it basically involved soda, chips, music and a few dozen friends.

  • I can only imagine what the funeral home thought of the sweet sixteen arrangement.

  • Geez! It's enough to give kids AND parents a complex.

We did a lot of "rent a VFW or some place similar, bring in some sandwiches or pizza and cake, and have a dance party" when I was growing up so I'm pretty sure that was my 16th birthday. My mom was always the DJ.

  • I cannot remember at all if I did anything for my 16th birthday.  Despite going to school with a lot of richy-riches, only one person I knew had a big sweet 16 party.  And by most standards, it was pretty small.  She rented a conference room by this old theater and people just hung out and danced and had a good time.  I think there was a DJ.  And a friend of ours who is a bellydancer performed as her gift.  But that was it -- no elaborate dress codes or favors or over the top cake or big gift reveal.

Seriously, I was raised in the ritzy part of town and I can't think of anyone (maybe one exception) who had a big party like this. It's obnoxious.

My mom threw us a little surprise party at Mountain Park Round Table.

  • I didn't get a "happy birthday" from anyone in my family until early evening that day.  Just call me Molly Ringwald.  Sad

  • i think my sixteenth birthday involved inviting a bunch of my squirrelly friends over to hang out in my basement for the evening. we listened to music and ate candy and bounced around.

  • I didn't realize Ohio was a hot spot for party stuff.
  • I got to take 2 friends out to dinner with my family for my 16th birthday.  I thought it was awesome.

My friend who lives in San Antonio has already told me that she is paying to fly me down there to make a cake for her daughter's 16th birthday party in 2 years.  Really?

  • A few years ago we were at a restaurant where a 15 year old was having her quinceanera.  She had three limos, and eight attendants.  I'll bet the whole thing cost as much as our wedding.

Yeah me either. Must have missed that store...

My 16th bday was the first day of my junior year of HS. I went to school and then mom made spaghetti for dinner and we had carrot cake. Just like we'd done for 5 years prior and the years since.
