Questions re: Selling Something on Craig's List

When selling on CL do you usually do first come first serve?  Here's the situation.  I'm selling a snowsuit of DD's on CL.  I had someone say they could meet me on Wednesday to look at it.  Great, we set up a time.  After that,  I then get another interested person who says they will meet me on Tuesday and take it.  So do I instead met with the Tuesday person tomorrow and if she wants it then cancel the Wednesday person?  Or do I hold it for the Wednesday person and if she's not interested hope the Tuesday person can meet me later this week?

  • I would do first come first serve on something like a snow suit but definitely let the Wednesday person a.s.a.p. know if Tuesday person buys it.  Does your ad say "First come first serve"?

  • Depends on how nice you feel.  I have waited for someone and I have had someone wait for me :)

With kids, its hard to get some place at times.

  • If you've already told the Wed. person that it's theirs, it would be crappy to reneg. But if you haven't confirmed with them, then def. sell it to the person who can meet you earlier.

We sell/buy a LOT on CL, and it's almost always first OFFER first serve, but we ended up with our (totally awesome super cheap) glider because that first offer didn't show up to pick it up from the buyer. So he called us!

  • From your post, it sounds like the Wed. chick is a 'maybe' but the Tues. girl is a 'for sure'.

I would e-mail the Wednesday girl and let her know that you have someone that will for-sure buy it Tuesday, and you can't pass up a 'for sure' before a 'maybe' but that you wanted to give her the option to commit to purchasing it (instead of just looking at it) before passing her over for someone else.

I don't think anyone could argue with you on your logic when you explain it that way.  As long as you communicate and are fair/up front, I don't see how anyone could get too upset...

I agree with this.  We just sold a large amount of stuff on CL and I had to do this a few times.

  • If it weren't for the fact that you're also selling a snowsuit I'd ask if you were buying mine :)  I am selling DS's today and meeting someone at Noon...had the same issue, but the first buyer seemed more interested so I waited for her.
  • DH has been in that situation before, where he's asked someone to meet him on a WEdnesday but then the seller sells to someone else by then.

I'm selling some stuff in my work's classified ads and I've had several people call about the stuff (old wedding things). I met with the first person who called me, she didn't want it. I called the second person who was interested and let her know it was still available. I got a third call and I told her I was in talks with the second person but that I'd call her if the second person wasn't interested. Second person seems really interested, we're just playing phone tag. If I don't hear from her by the end of the day today, I'll call the third person.

So basically, if you're in talks with someone about getting together to purchase it, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and still meet with them. You can contact the second person if the first person doesn't want it.

  • I always do first come, first serve.  Last summer I went back and forth with a couple that was waiting for their tax return money when buying a double stroller.  This went on for several weeks.  Finally I reposted it and listed that whoever could meet first and wanted it it was theirs.  If someone is truly interested they will make the effort to get it sooner rather than later.

  • I should probably preface this by saying that I don't do a lot of Craigslist buying/selling.  I'm in a similar situation right now, but I'm the buyer.  I had set up a time to check out an elliptical on Thursday.  The buyer just sent me an email today that they are having someone come look at it today who is bringing a truck (basically buying it).  I'm annoyed because I would have come to look at it today if I would have known that there was some competition.  I would say at least let the first person who contacted you know that there is someone else who is interested and see what they say.
