since we're talking presents

I'm totally stumped on what to get Bug.

Two years ago we gave her a new bedroom, which rocked, but I feel like everything's been kinda "ehhh" since then. And we got Dimi some really cute stuff and I don't want her to feel stiffed.

Plus she's going through this phase where everything I think she'd like she rolls her eyes at and I have to keep myself from saying "but you used to like this" just like my mom did.

What did you want when you were 11?

Re: since we're talking presents

  • A phone in my room?  Do kids still get those or does everyone have a cell these days?  Is a Kindle too old for her?

  • I loved reading. Anything reading related i loved.

How about a diary? or this

This is a magazine of writings and art by 8-13 year olds

Bug is such an intelligent and mature girl, so i can understand her thinking things are immature.

You can adopt an endagered animal in her name

Does she like music? Music lessons?

  • Shopping trip for new clothes with a friend?

  • A trip into the city to see a play or the symphony? When I was 13 getting dressed up and going to see Midsummer Night's Dream made me feel super mature and stuff,  and for several birthdays my mom and I went out to a nice dinner and went to see the Seattle Symphony. I always enjoyed that.

  • Last Xmas we did more activities-as-presents, but I think that there was less excitement about opening stuff. I can try to tie them into physical presents.

She's started playing the clarinet in school. Lessons and symphony tickets sound promising.

She also loves me making her things.

Her big birthday present was a bike. She needs a basket. Maybe I'll add some passes to a state park ...and picnic stuff? Or is that too aarp?

Is there anything you can make for a bike?

Did your parents ever make you anything awesome?

    Boys.

  • All I wanted was clothes.  As many outfits as possible so that I could have more new outfits than my arch frenemy Pam Price.

  • Does she want a bike basket? That could be fun to personalize for her.

Besides, I'd probably pick out the wrong one. And returns would be a nightmare.

Sadly, Bug hates clothes and shopping. However, she is surprisingly fond of accessories for someone whose mom never wears them.

She also wants "stuff for her room" I'm not sure what that means.

  • Dammit. She's just going to have to wait until she's grown up and can get her own boy.

I like the bike basket idea. I'm not sure how to personalize it. She likes Ugli dolls and weird things like that.

I'm also open to stuff from Etsy. She's got sophisticated taste for elementary school.

  • Over in Amsterdam, everyone personalized their bikes because it was easier to identify your bike that way.

Also, could you get her saddlebags? i loved mine. It is possible you could customize those with fabric (possibly waterproof fabric) in the shape of an ugly doll or something. i am not crafty but if you are or know someone who is, you might be able to make something pretty cool with that.

  • I like your saddlebags, Winged.

  • Assuming she wears a helmet while riding her bike, you could knit her something decorative for it. I knit some mohawks out of fun fur for my cycle team. They were a big hit and really easy.
