Maple Grove pet parents!

Hey,

My dog, Ringo, is super nice and outgoing and for a little dog has a lot of confidence!  When he was little I would give him baths and he loved the water. After a while I decided to take him to Petsmart in MG, he came back with a HUGE gash on his stomach. So the next time I tried Petco in MG, who overcharged me because he was not cooperating during the bath (mind you he is 1 now). So now I have decided to go back to bathing and cutting his hair myself, however he is super scared of the water, whenever I turn on the clippers the little guy wimpers and shakes because he is so scared. I would like for him to get a nice haircut for the holidays and don't know where to go due to the fact I am worried about being over charged or having something bad happen to him. Do you have any suggestions? Should I even bother?

Please no mean responses about how I am some crazy dog lady.

Re: Maple Grove pet parents!

  • Is there a Chuck and Don's out your way?  We love Chuck and Don's (its the only place that sells our expensive pet food), and I believe they do grooming.  I think they love our dogs about as much as we love them and I think they'd do a good job.

There is one in Plymouth right off Vicksburg.  It's in the same "mall" as Lunds, Old Chicago, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc and across the street from the Mann theater.

  • I guess if it were me I would probably just continue to cut him myself. It sounds like he had a very traumatic experience. There's a lot of bad things that can happen at the groomer's and unless you can find someone who gets a stellar referral I'd probably just do it myself. I started grooming our bichons about 5 years ago. There was a scary story that happened in our rescue group with a dog at the groomer and the noose they use in the wash sink. If the groomer steps away for a second and the dog wants to get out of the sink bad enough they can hang themselves. Not to mention all the things that can happen on the grooming table.  It's harder at first to groom on your own but once you get the hang of it's pretty easy. I think I do a pretty good job now and our dog has even done some modeling for print ads (with my haircut). I buy my supplies at Pet Junction in Shoreview. They sometimes have classes for grooming too. Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry to hear that! I haven't been to the MG Petco, but we take our little Murphy to the Petsmart in MG for grooming and haven't had a problem...yet.

Unfortunately Murphy is so crazy, there's no way we could ever groom him ourselves; we've tried and my husband actually put a huge gash in his neck and had to take him to the E-vet.

Murphy goes to the Animal Wellness Center right off 494 and Bass Lake Road in Maple Grove. He has his vet care there and grooming. The only reason we don't do his grooming there now is because it's a wee bit more expensive than Petsmart and a bit harder to get into, but they are the sweetest there with all the dogs. And the girl's really good! I highly recommend them. You don't have to be a vet client there to have a grooming appt. They also do doggie day camp and lodging. We've done both with Murphy and he's loved it.

    Here's their website: http://www.animalwellnessmg.com/

The main number is what you'd call for the groomer, if you're interested. Hope that helps!

  • Thanks everyone!

Ringo stayed at the animal welleness center- puppy day care over the weekend of our wedding and loved it! So I may give them a call and try it out!

  • I have heard horror stories about the MG PetSmart as well as the Plymouth PetSmart.  The worse story by far was from MG, a resident at the property I work at took her dog in for regular grooming.  When she picked him up he smelled like an over floral perfume and had a bandage on one of his paws.  She asked what happened and the groomer said, "oh it was just a knick, the hair cut and bath is free today."  She looked at her dog and obviously he hadn't been fully cut or bathed at all.  She asked the groomer to take off the bandage, when she removed it the paw was gushing blood.  The groomer had shaved off his pad on his paw and just bandaged it up and said her ya go.  The owner of the dog took him right over to Banfield vet (the one in PetSmart) and long story short at this point since it doesn't concern the grooming,  the vet OD'd the dog on pain meds and the dog had to have his stomach pumped by his regular vet.

Since hearing this story we will never go in there for grooming.  If you want to drive a little further, we have an amazing groomer in St Micheal (exit 204 or 205).  She grooms out of her home and has been grooming for nearly 20 years.  She does it part time since she is a stay at home mom and is super affordable.  We pay about $20-$25 less than we did at PetSmart.  If you PM me I can give you her information, since she is out of her home I don't want to give her home phone number out to an online forum.  We have been using her for 2 years and have recommended her to quite a few people who are also very happy.

HOLY COW! After hearing that, I'll never be taking Murphy there again!

  • We just moved here and are close to the Animal Wellness Center.  My mom and sister take their dogs there and love it!  I plan to take our dog there when it's time.  There is also another groomer just down the road from there called Shaggy Dog groomers or something like that.  I do not have first hand knowledge of either place, but maybe you could check Yelp for reviews.  GL!
  • We had a bad experience with Shaggy Dog in MG too.  No injuries involved this time, just a bad hair cut and very expensive if I remember right.

  • Went to the Animal Wellness Center and they did a great job! Since Ringo had been there to stay at the resort he recognized all the smells and was very excited to get inside. The groomer said he was a wonderful pup and was very fun and playful! He came out very happy and was still giving the groomer kisses!

Thank you everyone for all your input!
