So, did anyone start changing their last name legally?

How long did it take to get your marriage certificate back?

Mine is holding up the process. I know it's only been 2 weeks, but c'mon PA.

Re: So, did anyone start changing their last name legally?

  • I got married on the 11th and took my temp marriage license to the SS office on the 13th and changed my name on my SS card. Then from there I went to the bank and changed my name and deposited my checks.

When I got back from our honeymoon the marriage certificate was waiting for us. I started to call credit card companies and went to the DMV. I think I have one more credit card to change and that's because they are being a pain in the butt and won't send me out a new application so I can update my name. Almost done!! :)

  • I opted to take my marriage license and file it myself, that way I got the certified copy I needed to change everything the same day, no waiting.

I got everything filed and changed 3 days after the wedding.

  • That's what I used! All they need to see is that you got married on whatever date and your new name. It worked for me. I went to the SS office in Bucks County, on Rt 1 and they changed it. It takes a week or so to get the new SS card in the mail.

  • We got our marriage license back the Wednesday after the wedding but I had to wait to get my birth certificate from my parent's house before I could do anything. I'm hoping to get it all changed by Friday.

The lady at the probate court did tell me I could use the paper she had given me that day until I received the certified copy, if needed.

  • I needed to go to Register of Deeds to pick up certificate.  The DMV and SS are done.  Still in process with all bank accounts and credit cards.

  • In MI, we had to do 3 copies. Two got sent back to the records people, but we keep the one with the gold seal. That's the one I used for the SS and for my license, and when I get my license, for the banks and such.

  • NH is different...we picked up our license when we got back from the honeymoon, mailed one copy to the SS office, took the other copy to the bank and DMV.  I changed my name on all three things in one day (SS via mail).  then with my new id, i could change everything else.  it is so weird when people ask me for my last name :)

WHAT? No way!!! I think I'm going to leave work early on Friday and try it with the keepsake one. Fudge! That means I spent $15 on a copy of the marriage license I don't actually need.

  • Alison - in PA, do you need your birth certificate or just your current ID and a copy of the marriage certificate? I do not have an official certified copy of mine yet.

I just gave my current ID and the marriage certificate that was given to me after our wedding ceremony. That was filled out by the priest that married us. I didn't have my official one until after I got back from my honeymoon. I used the official one to get my DL changed.

  • I just have the DMV, my Ebay account and my auto loan to take care of. My DMV appointment is next week and after that I can change my paperwork on my auto loan (credit union that is financing it has weird rules) and my Ebay account. I suppose I should let my apartment manager know but I don't want him to use this as a means of having us sign a 6 month lease since we are month to month now.

  • Got my nifty little packet for all my Texas stuff, but don't have marriage certificate back yet. Very antsy, want to get all this stuff checked off my list of to-do's! Just checked the county clerk's office and it says it was returned on the 8th, so hopefully it'll be here soon. Apart from pics/vid, as of right now we actually have nothing else to prove we got married. lol It's weird. I thought we'd get something to hold onto while the license was being processed.

  • I have done everything but the MVA (Maryland DMV) because their hours suck and work has been sort of insane.

I knew I could use my 'keepsake' license, but I actually mailed in the form for the certified copies the day after the wedding (I also mailed in the signed marriage license for the officiant) and they were waiting for me when we got home from the HM.

  • We got our marriage certificate back in about a week and a half.  Used it to go to SSA and already have my new card.  Just too lazy (and vain) to get to the DMV.  I have a hair apt on Thrusday and I'm going after my apt so I won't have to look at another hideous picture for 10 years.  After I get my new DL, on to the bank, CCs and insurance.  I'm really dragging my feet and I don't know why...again, such a slacker :p
  • I am officially changed! Our license was in the mail when we got back from the Honeymoon. The week I was back I went to the SSA office and got my new SS card. I've been in the process of switching student loans/credit cards over ever since. Still have to change my bank account & get a new DL, but like LauraT, I am dreading going to DMV. It is the worst EVER here. Basically have to carve out 3-4 hours for it.
