I am a woman, 43, who is single, no boyfriend or husband, but my sex drive is suddenly very high. I'm starting to feel embarrassed about my need to masturbate so frequently. It's just expected and accepted of men; but as a single female, I feel embarrassed about it. It keeps me up at night and I feel the urge throughout the day.
Oh...and I have to add, I'd never do anything casually to relieve this. I've only had serious long term relationships (with marriage potential). So, I would never act on these urges. It goes against my personal values.
What does this mean? Should I be concerned. What should I do about this? How common is this (for women)? I feel like I'm turning perverted, although I'm pretty normal as far as my desires....I only like men and thinking of men.
Could I have something medically wrong with me and how do I get it to subside, so that I can sleep at night?
Re: when is sex drive too high
Ah the joys of perimenopause.
Your hormones are in flux; see a gyn.
Tarpon...you suggested that I should see my gyn. why? Is there something that they do, regarding this?
The peri-M word makes me VERY nervous. I avoid any info on the M word, because it makes me think that it's the end of femininity and sexuality.. and I'm not married yet :-( How can that be joyful?
Any sudden change in libido is a reason to see your gynecologist, just to make sure everything's still OK.
I'm unclear as to whether you're saying you don't masturbate at all in your original post. If you don't, I recommend starting.
From what you describe, it does sound like a hormonal fluctuation, but it doesn't sound at all worrisome. Of course there is such a thing as a "too high" sex drive, but it doesn't sound like you come anywhere close to that, clinically. Wanting sex or to masturbate two or three times a day can be completely normal.
See your gyn to alleviate your fears; invest in a couple of good vibrators; and have fun with yourself!
I meant that in kind of an ironic way.
And by no means is menopause the end of femininity and sexuality: look at Raquel Welch, Sofia Loren and Christie Brinkley. They are 55 plus and older; Sofia is still hot at way over 70 years of age.
An increase in libido can also signal other issues -- have them check your thyroid, also. Thyroid problems can cause a loss of sex drive or a vastly increased sex drive.
