Meal planning

So I've decided to finally try meal planning (weekly menu for lunch and dinner) to try to get a handle on my grocery bill. Last night I sat down and wrote out a menu after shopping my pantry and fridge.  I'm sick of having a full fridge and pantry, yet nothing to eat!

Anyone else meal planning? If so, wanna share weekly menus for ideas?

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Re: Meal planning

  • We don't do a strict meal plan but I will purchase ingredients to make certain meals and leave it open as to which night we have each meal.  We generally plan around the protein so each week we will have a night each for red meat, chicken, and pork as well as a leftover night.  We also schedule in about 1 night a week to go out.  The weekends are when I generally make big meals if we are in town but we travel at least 1-2 weekends a month.

An example of a week would be:

Mon - Beef roast with mashed potatoes

Tues - Chicken with some sort of pasta

    Wed - leftovers

Thur - pork chops & rice

    Fri - take out

  • We meal plan every week. We find that we save money, waste less food, and eat out less often. We usually try to plan on Sunday before we go to the grocery store, though this has changed over the summer because we get out CSA share on Tuesdays. I look forward to Friday nights all week because I know we always have homemade pizza on that night!

  • Oops, forgot my meal plan

Sunday: Crockpot chicken with tarragon and leeks

    Monday: Eggplant Parm

Tues: Marcobotic Meal (salad, collards, broccoli, whatever other veggies we want to cook up)

    Weds: Thai stir fry

    Thurs: Garam Masala Curry

    Friday: Pizza night!

    Sat: Eat out

  • Oooh, I just created a meal plan using a 21 day cycle. One week is 5 items; next week a different 5, etc. I'm going to email you what I have so far because it's too embarrassing to put here. :)

  • This week, we're having/had:

Mon: Chalupas (or tostados, depending on where you're from)
    Tue: Cold tuna macaroni salad
    Wed: BLTs
Thur: Chicken w/ pasta and veggies
    Fri: Possibly leftovers

I think we're going to try homemade pizza soon. We're kinda excited! :)  Maybe Saturday night.

  • We're attempting to get better about this...however, this week, DH had to work the late shift last night (5:00 p.m. - 4:00 a.m.), and I have another stupid cold, so it all pretty much went to hell.

We plan around what we get in our CSA box on Sunday. We also cook strictly vegetarian at home. The plan for the week WAS:

Monday - something with Kale (which I did make -- Kale stewed with tomatoes, onions, and garlic.)

Tuesday - something with Sorrell (which is becoming "some sort of take-out so I don't have to get out of bed)

Wednesday - Stir-fry (this week: zucchini & patty pan squash)

    Thursday - Big salad

Friday - usually go out and/or order in

  • I really need to get back in the habit of doing this... I was doing really good for a while but fell off the wagon.  It did save money on groceries and make us eat more balanced, healthy meals as well.
  • Real Simple Magazine had a month-long meal plan in the October issue complete with shopping list.  It doesn't carry proteins and ingredients between days very well, but it's got some good recipes.
