volunteering in georgia?

Does anyone volunteer anywhere? I have been wanting to volunteer for awhile helping kids and was wondering if anyone on here knew of a place. I have found several places online, but thought I would ask here as well.

Re: volunteering in georgia?

  • I volunteer with DSA (Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta) at the Buddy Walk each year.  If you think you might be interested, the walk is Sunday at the Marietta Square at 1 p.m.

"Helping kids" is very broad.  What are your interests?  Skills?  What age do you want to work with?  Are you interested in working with kids with special needs?

  • A lot of it depends on the area you're in as well.  There are some organizations in specific areas and not in others.  What part of GA are you in?
  • I live in Woodstock. I am open to help with anything. I have finally gotten settled in our house and just feel like I need to be doing some volunteering again. When I lived in Texas I helped with special needs classes, I helped at an assisted living home for the elderly as well. I can't afford to donate as much as I would like, so I have been feeling the need to donate my time.

I would love to help with the Buddy walk, but I will be out of town this weekend and the next. Do they just do the 1 walk a year?

  • DH and I have done volunteering through Hands on Atlanta -- handsonatlanta.org
  • Yep, Buddy Walk is just in October, but they need volunteers year round.  You can visit their website here

If you are interested in the special needs population, DH and I also volunteer at Chastain Horse Park in Atlanta.  They run a therapeutic riding program and are really short volunteers for the fall.  We've really enjoyed our work with them, even though we haven't been able to go as much as we would like.

Wills Park in Alpharetta also does some of that type of stuff too, I believe, but it's been awhile since I've been there.

  • Grea, thanks!  I called the chastain horse park, but the orientation for this month is this weekend which I am out of town. So I will be going to the one in November.
