Independent health insurance?

What company do you use?  We have to get Adam insurance.  To put him on mine, we'd have to pay over $500 a month.  There HAS to be something better than that!!!

Re: Independent health insurance?

  • My old job gave a stipend for insurance instead of actual coverage. We all went with Blue Cross Blue Shield. I have some pre-existing stuff so it was just under 300 a month.

  • I currently have BCBS with my employer.  They said that to add Adam, we would have to pay over 500.  My last job that I had, if Adam and I had been married, they would have covered him 100% (with BCBS).  It sucks.

  • That sucks. Has he looked into individual coverage?

I know if Aaron went on my insurance (now with new job, still BCBS) it would be 500, but if he did a BCBS individual plan it would be a lot less.

  • DH and I both had Aetna independently. I was paying about $247 a month.
  • I had BCBS a while ago and it was in the mid $100's.  You could try Aetna too.

  • Go to www.ehealthinsurance.com.  You can put in you're price range and compare a bunch of plans from a bunch of different providers to find one that works best for what you need.

  • definitely check out ehealthinsurance.com for coverage in your area.

I did an individual plan through BC/BS... granted, it was a short term option, but it was hardcore cheap.

  • Well I think first you need to figure out what type of coverage he needs.  Does he go to the doctor a lot or are you looking for more of an emergency plan?  Would something like a high deductible plan work where you can have a FSA with all of those benefits?
  • He would most likely need a lot of doctor visits.  (Although he does tend to go to the ER a lot).  He needs to be put on regular medication for pain, so he would need to be able to see a doctor on a regular basis for that, so I'm guessing we would need a low deductible?  I honestly have no idea about insurance stuff.  Mine has always just been given to me through work so I've never had to research it.
