Church Recommendations

My family and I have been going through a lot of changes lately. I wanted to find a church home for me and my family. The problem is, I have a lot of friends and family that go to certain churches and he has a lot of friends and family that go to another. I don't know if any of you remember me, but I am in an interracial marriage and I want to go someplace where we can actually worship and not feel uncomfortable because everyone is staring. We have visited a few churches and the whole time we were there we couldn't enjoy it because we were being stared at like we had warts on our faces. We have teenager as well and if we can find someplace that has an amazing youth group we would be really grateful.

Thanks Ladies for your help.

Re: Church Recommendations

  • What area of town are you in? And any denominations you prefer/prefer to stay away from?

  • We live on the NW side of town. H and I both are Baptist, but are both open to non-denominational churches.
  • Well, it isn't Baptist, but we used to go to a Methodist church up there that I LOVED, and I miss it a lot (the pastor married us, and she was amazing. Can't say enough wonderful things about her). Unfortunately since we're now SWOKC, it's a bit of a drive to get up there.

It's Crown Heights United Methodist, and it's located at NW 37th and Western. The services are traditional, and they have a lot of options to get to know the other church members. It's a pretty small group, and they're all incredibly welcoming to everyone and anyone. I'm not totally familiar with their Youth Group, but I know they have one for young children as well as teenagers.

Here's their website if you want more information: http://crownheightsumc.org

Also, if you do decide to go but feel a little awkward, I still know a few people who go to that church (who I actually knew prior to attending). I would be more than happy to put you in touch with someone who can meet up with you at the door or something. Just let me know.

    Good luck!

  • The church we go to have alot of of interracial couples there. Plus they have an awesome and involved youth group. The only catch is it's in Norman so I don't know if you would want to travel that far. I hope you find a church you are comfortable at and enjoy. GL!

  • I highly reccommend the Edge Church in Edmond. It's on Kelly and Danforth. They've recently switched preachers, I think, but the church is by far the most amazing church I've ever been to. They have a very active youth group too. They're website is just www.theedgechurch.com Good luck!
  • Wow, sorry your other experiences were so bad.

We go to LifeChurch.tv on NW Expressway and MacArthur. I love it there. It's actually pretty diverse. There are young, old, black, white, etc staff members and attendees. They have an amazing youth program called Switch on Wednesday nights. They have their messages on their website for free and on iTunes if you want to download some of them to check it out.

  • I absolutely LOVE my church.  They have a campus on NW Expressway... www.lifechurch.tv  There are several girls on this board that go there- I think Tavia goes to this location.  Our pastor is AMAZING and the praise and worship is contemporary and full of life.  I go to the OKC campus at 178th & Penn.  They are incredibly accepting and pride themselves on their open-mindedness and diversity.  You can check out an experience online first to see if it's the kind of style you're into.  I was raised in a Baptist church and it was a very easy transition for me.  Good luck!!  :)

  • Ugh, trying to find a new home church sucks! Or at least I find it very frustrating. We've been looking for a new church since March and we finally found one and became members this past Sunday. We love it! It's a Baptist church. It's the most energetic worship service I've ever been to. Everyone claps and sings and are focused on God, not focused on the people around them (So I doubt anyone would feel uncomfortable because of the way they're dressed, their race, ect.). BUT...it's in SE OKC/Del city.

Good luck finding a new church! Hopefully it won't take too long.

  • Good luck! We have definitely been in the same process but we think we found our match. We go to Acts 2 in Edmond, it is Methodist though. It is a contemporary, smaller church, with traditional values. We left Life Church because after so long it just wasn't for us anymore. We needed more tradition and less "lights and drama".
  • Oooh, oooh, me, me! (jumping out of my seat raising hand) My DH and I are interracial and we had trouble finding something we both liked and felt comfortable. We go to The Cathedral of Praise on Council & Wilshire and LOVE IT. DH actually had another job offer in Dallas shortly after we moved here but we decided that God had planted us here in that church and it has been amazing. We also have a small group so you could even try that out first if you wanted or check out the service online.

However, since u r NW OKC we should meet up anyway; I love to meet other interracial couples :-)

This is something we are trying not fall into to as well. We really want somewhere that will feel like "home". Thank you all for your recommendations, I went online to all of the ones that have sites on the internet and they all seem pretty interesting. I appreciate all of your help and keep your fingers crossed. I am talking with DH tonite about which church he wants to visit on Sunday.
