Pest Control

We recently discovered we might have a mouse problem. Just wondering if anyone has ever had this issue and what they did to remedy the situation. If you have experience with a specific pest control company, that would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance.

Re: Pest Control

  • We live in a wooded neighborhood, so we get a fair number of mice.  Fortunately for us, they never become a problem, because we have cats, and they are excellent mousers!  Any interest in getting a cat??  :)

We've also had good luck catching mice with live traps and release the mice away from the house.  But my neighbors who do not have cats have told us that this isn't sufficient for keeping their mice under control.  So it probably works better in combo with the cats.  Still, it's the method I would try first, because I've had bad experiences in the past living places where they used poison and kill traps.

  • I live in an old house and every year we get one or two.  I do NOT recommend the sticky traps. They have a substance that is supposed to put the mice to sleep but it has never worked for us.  I have had good luck with poison (D-Con) in out of the way places so my dog doesn't get in it and have yet to have a problem with them staying inside the house to die.  It makes them thirsty and so they go back outside to find water and *hopefully* die out there.  Otherwise, snap traps, the good old fashioned wood board ones with the spring, work the best in my humble opinion.  The plastic ones are nice because you don't have to touch anything to set or open them but they tend to get tripped and not catch anything.
  • Plunketts is a great extermination company, they will do the bait station like wittyschaffy described.  I have also found the good ol' wood traps are best.  Luring the mice in with chocolate syrup works the best.  I would prefer to do a live trap but without a cat or something else your problem isn't really ever going to go away.  Mice only need about 1/8 inch to get in, if you see any holes stuff them with steel wool because the mouse cannot chew through it.

ditto on the cat suggestion. our cats have eliminated the mouse issue for our entire neighborhood and the neighbors have thanked us!

  • We have a cat, which is how we found out about the mice. Unfortunately, our cat is declawed (stays indoors only) and can only play with the mice. We know he's chasing one when he's really active. He's a 10 year old cat, so he doesn't get excited over anything.

We are just worried that our cat won't cut it and we really don't want to deal with mice much longer. We've heard good things about Plunkett's, so may check them out.
