anyone own a dvd TV series?

I've been totally undecided on whether I should buy a Friends series, or another TV show i like.

Do you watch the shows much?

do they get boring?

do you buy a whole series and watch it chronological?

Do most of them come with fun commentary?

(I don't do netflix, don't have cable....)

Re: anyone own a dvd TV series?

  • We own a lot of TV on DVD, but we only buy the series that we know we can watch over and over again (for us, that means: Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Arrested Development, The Office, 30 Rock, etc.), and typically can watch stand-alone, mostly self-contained episodes.  I have yet to have these shows get boring for me, and I will randomly throw a disc in and just start watching them while working on something (typically during painting or baking projects).  I haven't ever listened to the commentary that comes along, but that's just because I'm not interested in it.

  • I have all 7 seasons of the Golden Girls, the complete SATC, and my Mary Tyler Moore collection is almost complete (only need season 6!).  I also have Ken Burns' Jazz documentary that was on PBS about 10 years ago.  I don't get tired of them - the shows I love, I LOVE.  I have a bunch of episodes of Daria (MTV) taped from my college days too.  Did anyone else watch that show?  Man, those were the days.  But yeah, I don't get tired of them.  Some of them, I could care less about the commentary.  It sounds like they just sat down and watched the episode without any thought.
  • We have a lot of tv on dvd (Weeds, The Office, Friends, Seinfeld, King of Queens, It's Always Sunny, South Park, Family Guy, Sex and the City, Nip/Tuck, Entourage and Sopranos).  A lot of the series we have are from channels we don't get and I really wanted to see the.  Most of it we've watched more than once, usually the comedies and 30 minute sitcoms.   Our friends and family borrow often too.

I always watch in chronological order and I never watch the commentary.  I think the only extras I have ever watched are the bloopers (the Seinfeld ones are hilarious).  I really don't care about the behind the scenes stuff, I just want the finished product;)

  • I own Seinfeld and the Office (U.S. version) every season on DVD.  Like PP said, they are good background noise or good for going on the treadmill.  I like the blooper reels and occassionally listen to the commentary.  It's interesting to find out how the different show ideas came to be.  I might start buying Modern Family on DVD as well.
  • I have the whole Friends series. I don't watch them as often as I used to, but that's mainly because reruns are on at 10 and 10:30pm every night so I get my fix then. I used to always watch a couple episodes in bed, and they are great for when I'm sick and don't want to really pay attention to anything but it keeps me entertained.

I usually watch chronologically unless I have a desire to watch one of my favorite episodes.

  • We have the Irish show Ballykissangel. We're thinking about buying The Wire. If we buy DVDs, we buy the ones we know aren't going to be regularly on TV in reruns for the next decade or more.
  • Also, if you look into buying Half Price Books sells tv seasons for really cheap.  Most of them are in really good condition too.

    oh!  Good to know.

so it sounds like a lot of you enjoy your DVD tv series.  Yay!  Will have to splurge at some point.  It's ridiculous Friends entire series is just $14 or so at Costco... why I can't decide is beyond me!  (though with Friends I do see it 6 days a week at 10 and 10;30, so maybe that's why lol)

  • My husband and I are total dorks! So for about a year we had a TV but didn't have cable (we were very lazy) and started making a joke about buying TV shows....which lead to him buying a TV show and then me bringing home another one, and another and another.....we have The complete series of Friends, Sex and the City, Arrested Development, Always Sunny in Philly, The Office, True Blood, and a few more. It is fun to have the office and always sunny because before the new seasons start we rewatch the old seasons. When I am sick I will watch Sex and the City chronologically, and now I just pick out some of my favorite seasons of Friends.......We now have cable so don't watch them as much anymore.

  • We own all of the Home Improvement series and watch old TV series on Netflix which we stream to our TV.  Right now, we're about halfway through all the seasons of Coach. :)
  • We have a TON. I watch every day while I'm cleaning the house, doing laundry, when I'm sick, etc...

We have The Jetsons, True Blood, Entourage, Weeds, The Wire, SATC, Family Guy, Simpsons, Tudors and many, many, many more.

We have the whole series of each - mostly because I like watching them chronologically and get frustrated if we've missed purchasing a season!

  • We have a few but the only ones we actually watch again are comedies (Seinfeld, Arrested Development, etc.).  H has all the seasons of Seinfeld and will watch it from time to time. I am not big on watching things over and over again, so I don't watch as much as he does.

  • I have the whole SATC series, Dawson's Creek series, and Dexter and I have the first 2 season of LOST.  I used to watch the SATC and Dawson's all the time, but I don't really have the time for that anymore.  Dexter we have only watched one time through for each season.  I hope to someday complete my LOST collection and re-watch them chronologically.  Randy never got into LOST, but I know he would like it....so someday if we ever have time...
  • I have the first 2 seasons of Veronica Mars...and they're still not opened. DH has some Seinfeld DVDs (I'm not sure if it's one season or the whole thing). But we don't watch those either. It could be because it's on tv all the time and I don't like Seinfeld though.

I had completely forgotten about that show but I do remember watching this all the time. Wow.  Those were the days.

We have SATC, It's Always Sunny, a few Seinfeld, Family Guy, South Park, 1st season of the Smurfs, and a few others I am forgetting.  We have too many for them to ever get boring!

  • I bought the entire Gilmore Girls season on Black Friday a few years ago.

Do you watch the shows much? DH and I (yup, DH loves the GG) usually watch the entire series through around once a year.  We've watched it 3 times through now.

do they get boring?  Nope, we love em.

do you buy a whole series and watch it chronological?  We watch it the episodes in order.

Do most of them come with fun commentary?  Uh, not sure on that...
