I don't get much time to post so I just thought I'd do a big update post.
1. Davis has been sick off and on for 3 weeks, it is really wearing on all of us, first it was a sinus infection, got that cleared up for a week, then over the weekend he got very sick, 105 temp, lathargic (sp), limp, not moving, kind of scary, i was on the phone with the nurse line when he went limp and I couldn't get him to open his eyes, she had us rush him to ER, got there, gave him Motrin in car on way, temp went down to 101, got sent home, an hour later it spiked back to 105 and we couldn't get it under control with anything, called nurseline back, had us alternate between motrin and tylenol every 4 hours, that worked, but he had a high fever sat-mon, all day monday he seemed okay but then started with a fever again and uncontrolable crying, took him to pedi, he has a throat infection, white puss, the whole bit, poor kid, so needless to say we are getting little sleep here
2. Our 4 year old LG LCD flat screen took a crap on us last night, joy!! this is just after J and I were saying what a great TV it has been, boo!!!
3. We did have D's speech eval yesterday, it went well, I expected what we were told and are going to be doing speech therapy, basically he has the language of a 6-9 month old, but she assured me no worries, she sees this all the time, there is nothing developmentally wrong with him, he is just a little behind in speech, oh but our insurance doesn't cover speech therapy, joy, so i'm looking into the county based program called help me grow, we have been assigned a case worker, just waiting for a call back and UT has a program through their speech/language pathology program, it is with students supervised by their instructors for a pretty good rate and J has speech therapists that work for him that offered to help us
4. i got the sneaky chef books, they are awesome, so far davis loves everything i make him, especially the super sneaky breakfast ice cream!
5. looking forward to the weekend, hopefully D feels good and we can make it to the pumpkin farm and to a fall festival in sylvania
Re: Some Updates
Yeah, they said I was 4th in line at Help Me Grow in Lucas County. Hopefully they call soon.
UT also has a waiting list, plus I have to do evals with them and they charge for it, grrrr..... Not sure if we will go that route or not because it is a gamble if we'd even get in for therapy next semester (January) and I really don't want to spend $150 to get evals done with them and then sit on a waiting list for a few semesters. By that time he might just talk!
I still kind of feel like I failed Davis because he doesn't talk, but I have to stop it. Every single kid is different.
I feel ya! My oldest dd had selective mutism and didn't talk until 4th grade. OMG. That was hell for all those years.
Glad you like the sneaky chef books...their recipes are awesome!
Im sorry Davis has been sick, hope he gets better soon!
Thanks for the update!
I hope he's feeling better soon and that you can get the therapy stuff figured out asap.
Boo to the TV crapping out though. Ours bit it a couple of months back. What ever happened to TVs lasting for years and years?!
Thanks for the updates!
What is this sneaky chef book you speak of? Sounds awesome!
And What/when/where is the fall fest? Maybe we can meet up with you guys
Oh poor Davis, hope he starts feeling better soon.
I will tell you that even though I have coverage for speech, until I reach my deductible I do not so we have to pay out of pocket. I take him to Hyman Hearing & Speech on airport highway, across from BRU. It's $60 a visit for a 1/2 hour...it's worth every penny. Not telling you what to do, but I would want to get him help sooner even if it meant paying for it. We just cut some other things out of our budget to cover it. She taylors a program for each child, it's awesome!
I'm guessing you will have to go through the same eval I did with Help Me Grow, it was long and a bit overwhelming because they did the full EI eval not just speech.
And I know what you mean about feeling you failed, because it seems like everyone says, "oh do you talk to them at home", "do you name objects around the house" like people think it's your fault the kids isn't talking. Then they just say, oh some kids are late talkers".
And I disagree about trying to get them in somewhere right away even if it's $60 a week. Maybe if he was over the age of 2 I would agree, but for an 18/19 month old I don't see the harm in waiting an extra month to get into a free program, I know I personally don't have $240 to cut out of an already tight budget.
The lady that did our eval was nice, but she was like, do you let him stir his food with a spoon?? I told her no and she asked me why not, well, I said I just never thought of it but he does hold a spoon when I spoonfeed him and he dips into his food. She insisted he needed to stir it. WTF. I said, okay, then I'll show him how to stir food. LOL
Yeah and she asked me a million times, do you do this, do you do this, YES!!! I do everything she asked. I talk simple to Davis. CUP. DOG. MAMA. DADA. I point to everything in books we read. I do everything you are supposed to do and I've been doing it for months.
Another thing that annoyed me was that she commented on him not looking at her in the eyes at times. A. he doesn't know you B. you are being a little rash with him C. he was trying to stick an airplane into the pocket of an envelope you gave him so he was BUSY
Like I said she was nice, but some things she did rubbed me the wrong way.
After we left I felt slightly bad about myself. I'm curious to see her report that she is sending.
I'm not going to jump on top of paying out of pocket, our insurance doesn't cover it period. We don't even have a deductible to meet, they just flat out won't cover it unless you have an accident that causes you to not speak. He is only 18/19 months old and I know for a fact years ago they didn't even intervene this early, I've talked to a lot of people whose kids just started talking sentences at 2. I'm not saying I don't want help for Davis because I do, but if I can get help free or low cost, I don't think it is a big deal at this point to wait a month or even two. If he was a little older I'd consider paying out of pocket like Hound said until we got him in a program that was free or low cost.
