XP: Shopping for bathroom materials

lars and I are starting the process of finishing a bedroom, office and bathroom in our basement.

Do any of you have recommendations for online or brick/mortar shops that sell bathroom fixtures, tile, etc for a good price? (Besides BMO)

We need to purchase:

  • tile (i'm thinking white subway for the walls and slate for the floors?)
  • vanity for a vessel sink
  • vessel sink
  • wall mount faucet
  • shower fixtures (shower head, handles, etc. we're thinking ceiling mount rain shower?)
  • toilet
  • medicine cabinet w/ mirror (since we're doing the vessel sink with no storage underneath, we feel like we need this space. there will be some wall storage as well.)

we like clean, modern (Scandinavian) design.

TIA!

Re: XP: Shopping for bathroom materials

  • So I have never been there myself but I have heard that Habitat for Humanity Restores have really good prices.  I guess they get things donated that they can't use so they sell them for cheap and use the money to fund other purchases.  Looks like there are a few in the metro area.

One note about white tile...I have it in my bathroom and I would rip it out if I could.  especially if it is glossy...it is SO hard to keep clean in the shower.

  • We recently did a remodel on our master bath.

We bought tile at the Tile Shop in Burnsville. They have a much better selection than big box home improvement stores. We found the big box stores to have decent selection of cheaper materials (ceramic tiles for example), but not a lot of options for natural stone tiles. Plus, their sales people are much more informed and can give you a lot more information. They do work on commission, but they weren't pushy with us at all.

I'm not sure if you plan to install the tile yourselves or hire someone. We hired someone to do ours, we didn't trust ourselves to do a high-quality job. In any case, we used one of the contractors recommended by the Tile Shop, and we got a discount on our materials that way. They put our order on the contractor's account, so we got 20-25% off everything. It saved us about $600 on materials.

We ordered our fixtures (faucets, shower head, etc.) through faucetdirect.com. We looked at fixtures at Home Depot, Menard's and Lowe's but didn't find anything we were super thrilled with. The selection on faucetdirect.com is better, and prices are very competitive (usually better) than at big box home improvement stores.

They also have fixtures on overstock.com, and shipping is always really cheap (or often free) there, so that's another good place to check. They even have vanities, sinks, etc.

  • Try www.bulx.com - it's like gilt.com but for building.
  • Ditto PP about the tile shop.  They have a much broader selection of tile to pick from over Lowes or HD.

If you're doing a vessel sink, you might be able to find something kinda fun for the base if you don't mind a little searching.  You could use a small table, dresser, desk, etc.

Another option would be the Habitat re-store that pp mentioned or the Green Institute's Re-use center in Minneapolis or Maplewood.  Their selection can be hit or miss but you could potentially score a great deal.  http://www.thereusecenter.com/

  • I just got a new catalog for Home Decorators Collection, and they have bathroom furnishings. They have more traditional-style stuff that you probably don't want, but there are some more contemporary options with vessel sinks too. Might want to check them out ... here's a link to their vanities. They also have an outlet section to their website.

I haven't bought bath stuff from them before, but I have bought office furniture, rugs and wall art from them. I've been happy with my purchases so far.
