Mom's or mom's to be - STD question

Okay so std is not offered through my work fmla is as good as it gets for me. A friend who also will soon be tcc mentioned to me that she just signed up for Aflac's std insurance at $40 a month. I asked her a few questions and am waiting to hear back.

Does anyone know if this is something you can purchase independent of your employer (like it's something their insurance provider doesn't offer) I am under dh's insurance which was an easy choice because my work insurance blows. I have been googling for a while now and really the answers are mixed in with explanations of std, which is not what I am looking for and not easy to weed through. Sorry if my rambling sounds dumb or is too confusing.

TIA if anyone can help me.

  • Yes, you can purchase AFLAC without going through your employer. You can get short term disability and they have a sickness plan that covers anything pregnacy related. So if you signed up for both plans, both plans would pay you when your out of work. For my plan I had to be on it before getting pg, and could not deliver sooner than 10 months after the policy went in to effect. So, I wasn't elidgible when I was pg, so I can't help a whole lot with how it works. However, my work BFF was and it worked out for her. She had to go without pay for the first week of maternity leave and then all of her benefits kicked in. Hope my rambling makes sense.

Makes perfect sense thank you for responding!! I didn't mean to sound like I didn't want to research it, I just wasn't finding much to answer my specific question. That sounds like what my friend has then, she also said it has to be 10 months.

This actually is such a releif, we planned on setting an extremely strict budget to increase what we have been saving if we were able to get pregnant  but we both are still pretty nervous about that unpaid time just because you never know what unexpected costs may arise no matter how much you plan; not to mention since I am at higher risk for blood clots that other part might be really smart as well, post pardum specifically is when risk is highest.

    Again thanks!!!!!!

Dirty, dirty Geo, whenever I see that I think Save the Date.

This mindset of this board is in the gutter, prolly why I like it so much here. Wink

Haven't you heard? It's STI's now instead of STDs, Confused The only reason I know it because they had a whole episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenager on it.

I definitely thought "save the date" though.

And we only have FMLA at our job too. short term doesn't cover it. We have money saved up, and O have PTO saved to help with it. So we should be ok, worse case is I only pay minimum on whatever left on my credit card at that point, which should be under $20 per month at that point.

    My overly happy baby girl!

This was my first though too.  My second thought was 'why is she sending out Save the Dates?"  Glad I was not alone.

  • Hey Pooks,

When you find out more about AFLAC, be sure to ask how much of your salary they'll cover, and how long. When I looked at STD for maternity leave, the cost of carrying it for 10 months (plus you don't know if you'll get pg the next month) outweighed the benefits they'd pay me when I went out -- b/c it was only 60% or something of my paycheck. So, we just socked our own money away (but then I got a job w/ paid mat leave).

Before you get pg and possibly have complications, it might be a good idea to have LTD and life insurance already in place, if you don't already have it, independent of your job -- especially if complications from blood clots might put you out of work for longer than 120 days.

That's what dh and I were trying to figure out yesterday, if we did it just for a year it would 480 (if it was $40 a month), I don't believe they would pay on my comission structure buuut it would still be much better than what I would pay out, we would probably only keep it for a year before our savings would be substantial enough to where we wouldn't worry about non pregnancy related emergencies factoring in somewhere.

I def have looked at the LTD (even just aside from pregnancy).

If I am not factoring something in here let me know because based on what your reply was I feel like I might have.....................

  • You're not missing anything. The next step is just to see how much it costs and how much they'll pay, and crunch those numbers. I hope it works out for you!
