Warning! Sad fox story... Tell me if I'm overreacting.

Beware, I saw a fox get hit by a car last night, so stop reading now if that'll bother you!

I don't know if I'm hormonal and overly sensitive, or because I re-watched this past Sunday's Dexter last night, but I need to know if I'm assuming the worst in people...

Last night, a friend came over to watch Dexter because she missed it on Sunday. At around 10pm, I walked to the door with her and as we were standing in the doorway, a truck came by and hit an animal in the road (which we now know was a fox). He was injured, but very much alive, and stood up slowly, and started wobbling over to the side of the road.

Then a motorcycle comes and hits him again, spins around, and goes back over the fox THREE times!

At this point, I was totally freaking out so DH had thrown on his shoes and as the guy was turning around again, DH ran out into the road. The guy hopped off his bike and said "I had to make sure he was dead, to put him out of his misery" and then picked the fox up by his tail and tossed him on the side of the road. He asked DH to call animal control, and then sped away.

Is it just me, or is this motorcycle guy crazy?? We saw the whole thing, so I know he never even slowed down, and it easily could've been a dog, and most people would pay for surgery for a dog with non-fatal injuries from being hit by a car. It was completely dark out, and we didn't know for sure it was a fox until the guy picked him up, and we were standing still, 50 feet away. I don't know how he could've known while on a moving motorcycle.

Even if he was sure it was a fox, he seemed so overzealous about running over a live animal multiple times, on a MOTORCYCLE!

Am I being sensitive? Did the guy do the right thing and I'm just traumatized to have seen it? Or does it seem a tad sadistic?

  • That guy sounds crazy.  Also it seems a little dangerous to run over an animal of that size with a motorcycle.
  • I know some people do think that way, but that is not something I could ever do.  I feel soooo sad when I see a dead animal.
  • Surprise

I did wonder as I was reading along if he thought he was putting it out of its misery but it still seems so wrong.  Did the motorcycle guy see the truck hit the fox?  Did he (motorcycle guy) hit the fox on purpose or by accident the first time?

    So sad.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Good, I'm glad you ladies think it's a little weird! I called my mother this morning and she says the motorcycle guy sounds creepy. And my friend who was there is really upset about it, too. So I think this guy might have been a real weirdo.

I don't know if he saw the truck, to be honest. It all happened to quickly, I couldn't say yes or no either way. From what I saw, he hit the fox intentionally every time. And I think he would've hit him again if DH hadn't run into the road, because he was picking up speed again, then slowed down when he saw DH.

I understand the philosophy of putting an animal out of his misery, especially a wild animal, and even though I don't think I could ever do it, the whole thing gave me the creeps.

  • He was putting it out of it's misery but there are much more humane ways of doing that than running over it 3 times then callously tossing it aside like that.

I would have been PO'ed. If it were a dog, god help me with the way I would have spoken to him.

  • The motorcycle guy seems crazy. I would have been angry either way. And as stated above, there are much more humane ways to put a wild animal down.
