Ok, I have a problem.

And admitting it is the first step, right?

Seriously, though, last night as I was trying to fall asleep I realized that I have purchased at least 19 pairs of shoes this year so far.  Granted, one pair was wedding shoes and another was rain boots (so those don't count, right?), and I don't think I paid full-price for anything but flip-flops, but still.

I just cleaned out my closet, so I don't have a shiit load of shoes anymore, and I'm feeling very content with my current shoe wardrobe, so I am really really hoping the shoe-buying craze is over. But I'm a teensy bit afraid that Jeff will realize just how many shoes I've bought recently and stage an intervention.  What if he takes them away?!

Re: Ok, I have a problem.

  • As long as you have just cost for said pair of shoes then why shouldn't you be able to keep them? However, I have a closet full of shoes so I'm probably not helping, at all.

Fingers crossed, he just won't notice! :)

  • Just hide them like I do!! And its ok we all have a shopping problem! I like to go buy boots and flippies all the time! Zach says ummm hello we live in FL I say hello it does get cold here 4 days a year I have to be prepared!!
  • Well I haven't gone into debt or anything.  I just feel like now that it's OUR money (more officially than before) maybe...I dunno.  I have worn all of them at least twice, except the pair that came yesterday (b/c it's raining today) and the pair that hasn't come yet).  And he knows about them all, and usually how much I spent, I'm just worried he will add it all up and go, "D@mn, I can't believe she gave me flak for buying a 54" flat screen", KWIM?

  • SO, I am jealous. I WISH I could have that many pairs of shoes, especially ones I just bought. I am CONSTANTLY looking and drooling, but haven't bought any excpet wedding shoes and flipflops in at least 6 months. Living vicariously through you girls!

  • I've been doing that lately, but with clothes.  I wonder how long it's going to take before K is finally like, "Um, why do you have a new package (or 3) sitting on the porch every single day when we come home?!"  Though he spends quite a bit of money on stuff for hunting, so I justify it that way.

I mean, if you're wearing the shoes and not just buying them for the hell of it, I think you have a valid argument to not take them away.  Maybe I'm just an enabler b/c I do the same thing, though. :-)  If you have an intervention, give me a call, I'll come get your back!  ha ha

  • For the record, I don't think Jeff would REALLY take them away, since the money is spent regardless.  He's not a tyrant or anything!  But...he might think I'm insane.  Well, he already thinks that, actually. :)

  • This made me laugh. H became well aware of my shoe addiction when we were dating. He doesn't understand it but he decided as long as I'm wearing them (not leaving them in the closet with tags on like some clothes I have...) than its okay.

Do you budget for or separate out your fun money? Maybe if you both gave each of $X per month and your shoe purchases came out of that, it wouldn't seem as bad, even if you're sharing the money.

  • He already knew you liked shoes when he proposed, and when he married you. He's not gonna all of a sudden realize you're a shoe addict. He already knows, and he loves you anyway.

  • LTB - Jeff knew of my shoe addiction, but it's matured.  I wouldn't say quantity-wise, but in college it was mostly cheap flip-flops because I was so broke.  Now that I'm only sort-of broke, but have a steady paycheck, I actually buy grown-up shoes (and of course, nicer flip-flops!).  I think it started with flats, then moved to include boots.  It definitely comes in waves.

We should talk about a fun money budget.  It's not really an issue at the moment, but it would make me feel better about my spending if I knew it was something we had agreed upon, and that he was also spending money on himself.  Good idea!

    I love you.  :)

Seriously - he saw me finding shoes for girls on TK and just sighed and said, "That's my fiancee."  Sometimes he would come home and the desktop would be filled with pictures of shoes (since I have to save them before PIPing) and he would just give me a look and say, "I hope you didn't buy ALL of these today?".  Angel

This is a good idea.  We actually started a joint account, but we're keeping our separate accounts as well.  The joint account is for bills, vacations, etc.  The individual accounts are for fun.  We made a decision about how much each pay check we would put into the joint account, and the rest is ours to do what we please - for the most part, within reason of course.

  • I go through buying spurts of things all of the time. When we did the serious closet clean out a couple of weeks ago I realized that I really hate my winter clothes. Insert sweater issue from the other post.

So my deal with H is that for every new item I buy, I have to remove of an old one and I can't spend more than $50 per paycheck to replace the items.

Sure, its probably going to take forever this way, but its better than me going out and spending $200-$300 at once to buy new stuff.

I get your point, and I think that overall it's a good system.  But when I really need to overhaul my wardrobe, I go to Arundel Mills and drop the $200-$300, because I can get like $500-$600 worth of stuff with it.  I had to do it a while back when I lost weight and realized that all of my smaller clothes were waaay out of style and/or worn out, since they were from college (or even high school) so I wore them A LOT because I was too broke to have more than two weeks' worth of outfits per season.  Ok, I'm rambling now, but point is, maybe it's worth slowly putting money aside for a shopping spree, and at the same time taking a BUNCH of stuff out of your closet.

  • I used to have a shoe additction but went to BAA, otherwise known as Broke A$$ Anonnymous.  Can't afford the shoes right now or I'd have a ton of new pairs.  I do however have a ton of old pairs, that are still practically new.  My problem was buying really cute shoes and wearing them only a few times because they killed my feet!

I really need to buy myself some new shoes.  Now that I am a married woman I need married woman shoes Stick out tongue.  Think I might head over to DSW after work.

  • I'm just doing it in small bursts because I know I'll spend the money elsewhere if I try to save it all up.

    Hmm good point.

And debdeb - I am usually really good about buying comfy shoes, but I do have one pair that I wore last Friday and I STILL have Band-Aids on my feet.  They are SO cute though - I've never gotten as many compliments on my shoes and I did on those (red faux snakeskin pointy-toe flats - HOT).

  • oh.  first of all, i just organized our closet, and boy do i have a lot of shoes.  after throwing away 6 pairs, i realize i now have over 40 pairs of shoes.  many of which i do not wear.  although today i am wearing really super cute ones from nordies that i forgot i had:

    http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3114338?origin=category&resultback=1974

second of all, i have wanted to buy so.much. for myself since the wedding is over.  i already spent $120 at the gap, i am getting a hair cut today, and i found boots and a bag i want (total for those two items alone is $600).  i dont feel guilty buying it because i make good money and i can do what i want with it, what makes me feel guilty is gerren NOT buying anything because he is still in this mentality of "we are broke, i really dont NEED those things, so i wont buy them."  even though it is not true.  so this weekend, instead of buying myself more stuff, i am taking him to REI and forcing him to buy things that he does not need but that he wants.  then i will feel better about going out next paycheck and getting myself the boots i want :)

  • Good plan Shauni - you can buy stuff if he does!  I used to have over 75 pairs of shoes, but I think now it's more like 50.  And like 15 pairs of those are flip-flops, which sort of don't count.

  • My co-worker's fiance gave her a rule.  She wasn't allowed to buy a new pair, unless she threw out an old/existing pair.  It lasted about 2 months before she went ahead anyway.  He didn't notice.

Jeff is so clueless about shoes, I could probably say, "Oh I threw away the black pair..." and he wouldn't know what pair I was talking about.
