Kristen

I'm at work. It's the start of a new term and it's crazy here! Oh and I just got handed a new class that I've never taught before. Lovely.

so the day classes started, they gave you a new one?! that's crazy! though i'm sure you'll be great!

how long are your terms? how many classes do you teach each term?

Re: Kristen

  • Ya, it was great! (note the sarcascm) I would have loved to prep for the class ahead of time. I mean, it's content I know for the most part, but I have to put together a syllabus, weekly outline, handouts, project info, exams, etc. It's a lot of work and it would have been nice to work on it over the break. Sigh.

We're a private school, so we don't have the typical semesters like a regular campus. Our terms are 10 weeks of class (we meet once a week for 5 hours), then the breaks are usually 1 week in between terms. I pretty much always have 5 - 6 classes. A few times I've only had 4 classes and it was awesome!! Anyhow, Margot is due the middle of next term, so this is my last full term and I just keep reminding myself of that and it makes me feel a little better about getting this new class dumped on me.

  • that IS a lot of work to do with no prep time, grrr! how many students do you typically have in each class? do they graduate with an associates or bachelors?

do you have 4 terms per year, then?

do they know you're finished after this term?

sorry for the 20 questions... i'm just interested :)

  • I will typically have anywhere from 8 - 22 students. It really depends on the class. They graduate with a Bachelors degree and we have 4.5 terms a year. We used to have 4 terms a year, but they recently changed the school terms, so that the students can graduate a little quicker.

We have a good mix of students - those straight out of high school and those who are going back to school, but it's definitely not your typical state university.

I haven't told them yet that I'm not coming back. I'm kinda scared. haha But, I always said I would do it in the middle of this term, so we can plan what to do next term when I leave halfway through (and never come back). They laid off a bunch of teachers the beginning of last term, so I wasn't comfortable bringing it up then. So, in the next few weeks, I'll be talking to my boss. I need to work up until delivery though, so I can use my medical insurance. I'm not sure if she'll have me teach as long as I can and then have sub, or if she'll have me coteach, or move me to a different position. I guess we'll find out.

  • do you have a masters degree? how many students are enrolled in the school? i used to teach at a business school that offered an associates degree. it was really small though, enrollment was around 75 students. and it was mixed, too. some right out of high school but i lot of adults going back to school. it was my first job right out of college and i was teaching people older than my parents, lol.

good luck w/ that conversation (when you have it). hopefully they'll work with you!

  • No, I don't have a Master's. I applied for the job and submitted my portfolio, even though they require a Master's. I just wanted to see if I could get anywhere. They called me and I was a bit shocked! I had an interview with the dept. chair, then all of the dept. chairs and President, and then had to test teach. They said they liked my portfolio so much, they would make an exception for me. I did have to get certified in some of the software I teach and they have been paying for that.

We have around 900 students on our campus. I have some students older than my parents as well and it's pretty funny! Oh and now that I'm pregnant, I get all of this advice from my older students that have already had kids. haha
