AFLAC

does anyone have it?

Mr. Fan and I have been talking about trying to make a baby. One of the things we're trying to plan for is that I'm a contractor, so I wouldn't get any kind of paid maternity leave.

I've been looking into AFLAC, which covers maternity leave, and I was just wondering if any of you new moms (or old moms) used it, and how it worked out for you.

I know there's a waiting period before you're eligible for the benefits.  Any other important details I should know about?

Re: AFLAC

  • I don't have AFLAC, but we did use Short Term Disability to cover my unpaid mat leave. It's pretty straight foward. You have to have it for a certain period of time before the baby is born (ours was 10 months) and then you submit forms from the hospital and doctor and your employer to prove that you did indeed have a baby and cannot work, and they send you a check.

  • I don't know nothing about nothing, but I don't think you can get AFLAC on your own, you have to get it through your employer. Can you do that as a contractor?

  • I can. I'm a W-2 employee of a company, and I contract through them for another company.  The company I am actually an employee of offers AFLAC, as well as other benefits like health insurance, to all of its employees for an extra cost.  They're just not included like they would be for a normal full time employee, and I don't get things like paid time off and maternity leave.

  • I wish I could get AFLAC.  I just found out yesterday that my STD plan doesn't kick in until your 31st day of disability and only covers to 6 weeks past a complication free vaginal birth.  So basically it only pays for 12 days.  Foffing foffers.
