As much as I dislike emoticons in work emails
I like them more than this:
I submit an email from my boss
"Thank you Winger for always taking care of business- smile ? we couldn?t get things accomplished without you and CoIrker."
"smile"? really?

My judge would have ripped my head off if she caught me with that (or any) emoticon in my emails.
never.change.
In my experience, the people who have the backgrounds and inspirational quote and animated emoticons in their work emails are the dumbest people there are. I've always wondered how on earth they managed to figure out how to put all that crap in their emails but couldn't alphabetize to save their lives.

I hate emoticons but I wish there were a better way to convey tone sometimes.
Writing the word "smile" in there, however, is not the answer.
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
I only know one person with a picture in their signature, and it's a giant red smiley face.
He's a tiny old Indian man, can't be more than 4'9", and is the most agreeable person in the world. So I completely support the smile at the end of all of his e-mails. He also types in all caps.
I FIX THE P&ID AND SEND TO YOU ON MONDAY OK
The nerve!

One of the parents from my class is pregnant and her email siggy has one of those Bump badges with x number of days to go and a ticker with the other kids ages. I wasn't aware people used them outside of message boards.
