Living Alone?

Have you ever lived by yourself? If so, for how long?

Re: Living Alone?

  • I lived alone for 3 years in college, then 3 years after college, then 6 months with a BF, then 2 more years by myself.
  • Nope.

I lived with my family until I was 18. When I was 18, I moved into the college dorms (I did have a single bedroom, but there were 8 girls in the suite, 16 people on the floor). When I was 19, I moved in to a townhouse with a girl from work, a guy from school, and a girl I'd just met who ended up being the made of honor in my wedding. My MOH and I lived together until we both finished grad school (shared a room for two years, shared a house for two years with our own rooms). When we graduated, she moved to Texas to live with the guy who is now her husband and I moved in with my now husband.

  • I've only truly lived alone for about 18 months after I graduated from college, first in an apartment then I bought my house.  DH moved in after that.

In college, I lived in an apartment for 2 years with 2 other girls, 1 summer I lived in a house with 8 girls while I was an intern (slightly crazy) and I lived with a "family" in Spain for a summer (but really it was just a woman and her elderly mother and they were never there so I might as well have lived alone.)

  • I did!  For three glorious years!  After breaking up with a BF who moved out, through dating DH until we bought our house and moved in together.  There was nothing I didn't like about it.  (not that I don't like living with DH, but it's different)
  • I got burned on rent by two roommates in a row and decided I was done. So in addition to the one semester in college I had a single, I lived alone for two years, got a roommate second year of law school, and then back to solo for my last year of law school. DH and I moved in together right after I took the bar exam.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • Yes.  Several times.

First time was for a year right after I got out of college.  First real job.  New city.  All that.  It was hard, but an experience that I'm glad I had.

Second time was just before I started dating DH.  I guess that was about 6 months before I broke my lease to move in with him.

Most recently was while DH was underway.  About 8 months total.  That included closing on the sale of our house, moving everything we own out pretty much by myself and then overseeing the packing end of my first military move.

  • Nope. I lived with my parents until college, then always had roommates, then moved in with DH. I did live in DC for a summer with some random people, so it was kind of like living alone since I never really did anything with them.
  • No- never.  Not sure I could.  I lived with a BF during my 1st year of college, broke up with him, met DH, lived with my college roommates in an apartment, then moved in with DH and have lived with him ever since.

  • I wish I had... but it's too expensive around here and I didn't go to college so I didn't get the dorm experience. I moved out with a BF and a friend when I was 18, then moved back in with my dad. Then moved out with a friend and her BF, during which time I began dating DH. Friend and her psycho BF broke up so we had to move. I could have moved back in with my dad, but DH offered for me to live with him and his parents until we found our own place. We moved into an apartment, then bought our house. :)

  • Never. In the area I live it's pretty much impossible to get an apartment that's not a complete sh!thole for under $1200 a month so living alone is pretty much not happening even if I did want to.

I lived with the parents till I was 18, went to college and lived in the dorms with roommates all 4 years. Right before I graduated signed a lease on an apartment with BF (who is now my husband) and 2 other girls I went to college with. One girl moved out after the first year so it was just 3 of us for about another year or so and then other girl's boyfriend moved in for about another year. We lived there for 3 yrs then Paul and I moved into another apartment for a year and then bought a house. That's where we are now.

  • I did briefly after I split with my ex husband and I hated it.  It was too quiet (he took my cats) so I got two kittens to keep me company.  Josh and I met shortly after that and I moved to IN about 8 months later.

  • I lived with my Mom until college, then lived in college dorms throughout college (though I had a single room my sophomore year and when I was studying abroad in England--does that count?), with one roommate in NYC, with two roommates in California, with five housemates in DC, and alone in a basement apartment in Bethesda for a year before DH moved in.

  • Yes - I lived alone for 3.5 yrs while living in Atlanta and after that, I moved back to Huntsville and lived alone in my house here for about 2 years before DH and I got engaged.
