Freak or Geek?

I had never heard of this TV series from the late 90's. Matt put it on our Netflix kwee. If you haven't seen it, it has Seth Rogan, James Franco, Linda Cardellini (nurse Sam from ER), and Jason Segal (the best man from I Love You, Man). We just finished the last CD of season 1 - the first and last of the series. It was a little boring in the beginning, but I loved it by the end!

So...were you a freak or a geek in high school?

I was definitely a geek! I was in band (concert, marching, jazz, pep), state piano titlist, had a job at the local ice cream shop, did stats for the wrestling team, and oh yeah - valedictorian with a full academic scholarship to the college I attended as an honors student. If we'd had "Mathletes" at my high school, I'm sure I would've been in that too. Ugh - I was such a dork!

Re: Freak or Geek?

  • Good show! So funny to see all of those actors when they were so young!

I'd say I was more of a freak. I had pink and red hair in middle school, eyebrow ring... Did the big pants, lots of accessories. I'm more of a geek now though haha

  • Definate geek.  I was in band too (marching and concert) and all college prep classes.  What did you play?  I played flute and piccolo!
  • Definitely a geek!! I was in marching and concert band (woohoo clarinet), was in honor classes, and was a brown noser to be really honest!! I just liked having conversations with the teachers and I get along with people really well. But I never did anything bad in high school. Typical geek!!

  • Neither. In HS I was the type of girl who was friends with everyone and got along with kids from all different groups (except I never really hung out with the "athletes".  I was an editor on my Yearbook and basically a "good girl."

Then I went to college - got an eyebrow ring, put purple streaks in my hair, and dated a drummer in a band and hung out with his pot-smoking friends for several years.

The Bump ate my signature. DD - Apr 2011 DS - expected June 2013
  • yeah i was neither... I got alone with the geeks and the freaks. I played sports, got great grades, graduated 10th in my class, and got drunk on the weekends.

For the record, I would never, ever, EVER go back to high school!

It depended on which band I was in - clarinet or alto clarinet for concert band, clarinet or alto sax for marching band, alto or tenor sax for pep band, and piano or tenor sax for jazz band. I started with piano at age 7 and then clarinet in 4th grade. My freshman year, we had a new band instructor and he encouraged me to learn sax - I was hooked all through high school.

Haha! Me too! I was usually the teacher's pet through elementary and I loved it. I didn't get into trouble through school either. I tried a few things - driving before I had my license, went to a couple of parties, snuck out of the house to see a boy. I almost got raped the first time I drank cuz I was so drunk I couldn't get my date off of me, so I didn't drink again for a long time.

But I did get two DAYS of detention during finals at the end of my junior year for signing out of study hall to go to the band building to practice and then actually getting in my car and leaving campus to go home and have a long lunch. Stupid punk sophomore kid that was doing it too turned me in! I was mortified when the principal was waiting for me when I walked back in the building after lunch on Wednesday of the last full week of school. I set a precedent - no one had ever "cut" study hall before and actually gotten caught, so they didn't know what to do with me cuz I didn't actually miss any classes. We had the rule that if you had a straight A for the semester, you didn't have to take the final.  I had all A's so no finals for me! Instead, I had to go to school and hang out with my favorite teacher, helping him clean up the chem lab, listening to music on his stereo all day. Easiest detention ever!

Ditto that sarah! But I would definitely do college over again.  I had some of my best (and worst) times there. Lots of new experiences. I have no idea how I kept my scholarship through all of it (I was out of the honors program by the end of the 2nd year...oops!), but I managed to pull it off and have a great time all at the same time.

  • Hhmm I'm not sure how I would describe myself other than I was the "good girl". I never got in trouble, got good grades, pretty much did the whole yearbook myself our senior year (no one wanted to help), was valedictorian, played volleyball, and got along with everyone. I was also the "dependable" one.  I went to a VERY small Christian school, we had 12 in my graduating class. I loved it though =]

  • Wow Katy! I thought my class of 53 was small! I played volleyball too, all the way through my senior year.Went to volleyball camps two summers at the University of Iowa. I loved it and considered trying to walk on in college, but obviously didn't follow through with that.
  • I started playing volleyball in 9th grade, I wish I had started sooner though. I was a cheerleader middle school through 9th ( I did both that year). I went to one volleyball camp at the University of Charleston, it was fun.

  • I remember seeing the commercials for that show back in the day! I never actually watched it, though.

I guess I was a geek. Anyone who taught herself to juggle, speak French, and crochet out of books probably qualifies, right? Oh, and I was half-fluent in elvish for a while there. From studying the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Which I read on a continuous loop for about three years.

I was homeschooled in the middle of nowhere... There wasn't much else to do. I'm surprisingly normal now!

  • I was definitely a freak.  I had random colored hair, piercings, big pants, lots of odd jewelry, listened to punk music.  Did a lot of um... things I shouldn't mention.... BUT I still got kick @ss grades.  Weird, huh?  My teachers loved me because I brought test scores up.... even though I skipped class on a regular basis.  I wasn't in any clubs or sports.

  • I was neither. I think I had the pretty typical high school experience. I was a cheerleader, heavy into the extra-currics, I was part of pretty much every group (so I got invited to ALL the parties, haha). I had a lot of friends, dated a lot...met my HS boyfriend towards the end of grade 11, so had a steady BF for senior year... I took the IB (International Baccalaureate) program, which helped me to get away with a LOT. The teachers and admin at the school gave a LOT of leeway to the IB kids because we were seen as being the role models, or the smart kids in the school who had a bright future. It was awesome for me, because while most of the IB kids didn't do much other than study study study, I barely ever cracked a book which allowed me lots of time to drink and act foolish on the weekends :) And when all my friends who weren't in the IB program were getting in sh!t for being typical bratty teens, I was able to get away with getting hammered in the bathrooms at the school dances, because my vice principal vouched for me every.time. I actually loved high school.

  • I was a Geek Home Economics was where you would find me and I dated a band Geek Sigh oh those were the days LOL! I did everything from sewing to cooking. Even taught the freshman class how to sew. BTW they were idiots and i realized I was not a teacher!!!
  • I was kinda in the middle- got along with people from alot of different crowds.  Early on in high school I played clarinet and was in the band, then gave it up after 10th grade. I was a "good girl".  I always did my HW, no one ever picked on me.  Had boyfriends.

And like sarah (i think it was you)  I would NEVER EVER go back.  I coudln't wait to get out and move on.

Edit- I forgot to mention I was in National Honor Society which my senior year allowed me to leave campus during study halls and get a parking spot, LOL.  I had a small close group of girls that I hung with and that was about it.

  • I was actually jock/freak in high school. I was cheer captain, on cross country, dancer, newspaper editor, etc. However, I was the only cheerleader with "Megan" written in the Metallica logo on my megaphone, pink hair, and tattoos! All my friends (outside sports) were either into death metal, ska, or were just straight up punk kids, and I've literally only dated musicians. Ever. Even my middle school boyfriend was in a band! haha
  • On the topic of the show-ish... Seth Rogan just showed up in my FB "people you may know". I have a bunch of friends who went to the same school, and I know/was friends with siblings of two of the people characters in Superbad were based off of. I was joking with DH last night that I should send Seth Rogan drawings of penises. haha

It's weird to see people you went to school with that are now famous. I have a bunch of people from my hs that are now musicians and actors. DH too. One of the people he really hated from hs is now an actor and every time he pops up in one of our favorite shows DH gets upset that he's ruining it!
