New face wash -- how long do I wait?

I'm trying a new face wash, and I'm wondering how long I use it before either it starts really working, or I give up and move on.  I've been using it  almost 2 weeks, and my skin is not as clear as it was with the last kind I used.

Do I use it for another week, or find something new?

Re: New face wash -- how long do I wait?

  • Have you ever switched facial products before?  With some rare exceptions, my face gets angry when I switch up and would take quite a while to adjust.  I get red & splotchy & breakouts.  It even happened when I threw a pre-RB Body Shop at Home party and tried the Body Shop Vitamin E face stuff.

So is this normal for your face if you change up?  And why did you stop using your old product?

  • I haven't changed in a while, but I used to change regularly.  I don't remember my skin getting angry, and I wouldn't say this is angry skin, just little breakouts, which annoy me.

I am trying to switch because they stopped carrying my face wash in stores, so I've been ordering it online for a while.  I'm kind of over it. And it was starting to dry my skin out a little too much.

  • I'm not an expert or anything, but I would think two weeks is a long enough trial period. What kind are you using? I have good luck with Noxzema Triple Clean and I always use St. Ives Apricot Scrub afterward. It's a combo I've been using for 5 yrs maybe and it's really inexpensive!

  • I love how everyone's skin is different - So many people swear by it but that St. Ive's scrub used to kill my face!  I think I still have half a tub of it hanging around somewhere that I just never chucked.

Ha.  If it wasn't so old & half used, I'd offer to send it to you.

I agree, if it's not an actual reaction & just isn't working as well, it's time to try something new.

Well, I guess I should mention that my skin is as normal as it comes- not sensitive, not dry, not oily. I use the sensitive version of the St. Ives so I can use it daily.

  • Ah, yeah.  My skin used to be really normal.  In my 30s it changed on me, damnit, and I'm prone to slight breakouts, usually on a monthly cycle, dry patches on my chin, and roseacia.  Grrr.
  • I usually wait a month when I try a new face wash because my skin goes through cycles along with my monthly cycle. I break out right before my period, etc. Right now I'm using two different face washes. Clean & Clear oil free acne foam wash (in a purple bottle) followed by Cetaphil moisturizer w/spf 15. At night I use a gentler Neutrogena make up remover wash (light blue bottle). So far this system works for my combination skin.
  • That's a good point about the monthly cycle. But if it's not your usual more-broken-out time, I'd go ahead and try something else.

I've been using that same combination of Noxzema and St Ives Scrub for over 20 years, but I only use the scrub maybe once or twice a week.

I've tried other things in the past and and nothing seems to work as well, so I go back to the old stand by.

If I do try something new I would only try it for a week or so before moving along.

  • I spent a lot of years using this stuff and really swore by it:

I never had an issue with it at all except for the price - $32 for 8.3 oz! - but it worked for me, so I sucked up the bill and went with it.  Once I did some research I wasn't happy about the sulfates in it either, but if you're going commercial, this is REALLY good stuff.  I still have half a container, 'cause y'all know what I use now.  I'll refrain from plugging again.  :D
