stupid first time mom question

Ethan is really congested and has a bad runny nose. It's running clear at least, but it's just continually dripping out, and god help us when he sneezes. He doesn't really have a fever and other than being more tired than usual, he's in good spirits. I just hate to listen to him wheezing like a 65 year old smoker. Other than the humidifier and aspirator, there's really not a thing I can do, right?

Re: stupid first time mom question

  • If he's wheezing badly, a nebulizer might help.  It would require a trip to doctor, but could be worth it.
  • Poor guy. Yea, that's about all I would do. Of course, I'm not the most experienced with sick little ones, we've been fortunate to this point.

  • In Terms of Endearment she puts the baby in a steamy bathroom.
  • Warm bath in a steamy bathroom might help give him some comfort.

  • I don't have kids (yet!!!) and know very little about medicine, but I think this is something you're just going to have to live with.  The best thing you can do is buy a pack of of Camels and put them into his crib, so when people come over, you can be like "I know he wheezes like a 65 year old smoker.  It's probably because he smokes like a 65 year old."  Then nobody will think you're a bad mom because they know that smoking is a tough habit to kick, and moms can complain all they want, but he's not going to quit until he's ready.

But I would probably not really let him smoke them.  Or limit it to when he's tied one on.

  • To help with the runny stuffed up nose you. An try squirting some saline solution up his nose. He won't like it but it will clear him out.
  • We do saline, aspirator, and steamy bathroom.  My ped recommends elevating his head while he sleeps (put a pillow under the crib mattress).

Can I tell you much you make me laugh?  B/c you do.  A LOT.

  • FYI, elevating the mattress is very frowned upon in the world of Ethan. After two hours of grunting and crying, we put the mattress back flat, and he immediately went to sleep. I am so ready for him to be able to blow his nose.

  • Maggie can blow her nose...except when  she actually needs to like now. She just wipes it on her sleeve.
