AW: DH, and a rant about wedding cakes

My husband just got home from "running an errand."  Turns out that he was picking up a dessert for our anniversary (Sunday).  We ended up throwing the top of our wedding cake away soon after the wedding because the frosting stuck to the top of the transport box, and it was basically destroyed.  DH called the bakery that supplied our cake and got us a replica of the top of our cake for our anniversary.  (*squee!*)

I don't know if you all remember, but we had a funny/frustrating experience with our wedding cake, that comes into play with this anniversary cake:

The cost of our wedding cake was included in the price of our reception, and we got a choice of cakes/fillings.  When we went to our tasting, they also gave us samples of "upgrades" to our cake/fillings just in case we wanted to spend more money.  We didn't.  But we did really like a white chocolate mousse filling that we were offered.  When we asked how much it would cost just to upgrade the filling, the bakery told us that was determined by the reception hall.  The reception hall said that if we wanted the white chocolate mousse filling, it would cost an extra $2 per person... or $240.

To this day, I'm furious about that.  I could make enough white chocolate mousse filling in my kitchen for under $15. It's what.... 8 cups of goo?  It's not that hard, and especially with bakery wholesale prices, I PROMISE there's nothing about the recipe or labor worth $2 a person.  So I asked the reception hall to explain why it cost that much.  They said that "it was an upgrade" but couldn't give me more information than that.  Of course not.

DH, when he was ordering the cake for this weekend, asked how much it would cost to upgrade the filling.  Guess how much it cost?

NOTHING. It was a free upgrade.

Ahhhh... bittersweet.   Stupid wedding industry and their stupid nickling and diming....

:)  SO that's my story.  HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 10/17 BRIDES!
