Re: List of endorsements

  • Is it just me or does anyone find endorsements made less than 3 weeks away from the election a bit odd?  If they were so hot for their candidate, why did it take so long to endorse him?  Is it a safe endorsement now that an Obama win seem more likely?

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • WaPo addressed this saying they didn't want to endorse before the final debate.  No doubt others did the same.  I don't think this list, though, is just recent endorsements.

    Hmmm....okay....I guess.

Oh yeah, I knew that...your post just gave me the opportunity to mention what I was thinking earlier today when I saw posts on E08 about new endorsements.

Yup, I think the potential for October surprises or late changes--a big gaffe in a debate, a bad VP pick--has newspapers wait until late in the game.

The other thing is timing in relation to voting. Most readers probably won't remember an endorsement their hometown paper made in say, August, if they vote in November, kwim?

Early voting starts in FL on Monday, so I'm curious about when my paper will endorse. I'm guessing we'll see a lot of endorsements starting this Sunday and probably the next couple of Sundays...when papers have their largest circulation/readership numbers.

  • WaPo's chat said that they endorsed on Friday for the first time b/c they wanted to reach online readers who are primarily weekday readers.  I thought that was an interesting idea and probably a valid one.
