Unpopular opinions!

Stolen from my local. I thought this was fun. What subject do you have an unpopular opinion?

Re: Unpopular opinions!

  • That teachers, nurses and firefighters do make enough money. I hate Lady Gaga. I really don't think I'm ever going to want children.
  • All of them!  My opinion NEVER seems to go with what most people think...even on here which is why I tend to keep my mouth shut.

Who gives a shiit! Pick one and post it.
  • Politics, eco-issues, and childbirth.

Oddly enough, my eco-issues and childbirth points of view generally go hand in hand but not really with my politics.  So I guess that makes my opinions even more unpopular!

Does anyone *really* like Lady Gaga?  I get liking the music but the person is rather... obnoxious.

I think nurses and firefighters make plenty but I think it's a bit ridiculous that I was making 3x what my Mom was making back when I was a background actor on TV shows.  She was a special ed teacher.  That seems a$$backwards to me.

  • Definitely politics...just ask Tracy...someday I will be Queen of the World.

I think that's the real problem. Other professions are seriously over-valued. I definitely don't think people in Entertainment should make more then public service people. That's just like a total mismanagement of priorities. Last I checked if I'm in an emergency Johnny Depp isn't going to show up to save me.

I also think Lady Gaga is boring and annoying. Like... "whew! she showed up wearing something crazy! That Lady Gaga sure is edgy." No, Lame.

So maybe this is a cop-out on this questions, but I find that my opinions stay the same, but are unpopular depending on who I'm talking to. For instance I was raised Catholic and still consider myself a person of faith. I do not believe organized religion is the only way to have a relationship with God. I can tell some people that and they get it, or pretend they do, and I can say the same thing (not once attacking organized religion) to someone else and you would think I just killed their dog or something. The same thing goes for politics & my view on the law.

My opinions on military service and (sadly) the LGBT community are very unpopular with my IL's.

    All hail Queen Normailed!

I'd say politics, however in my social circles I'm pretty normal.

Mine would have to be teachers. I think they make enough and they get TONS of time off.  I get that they put in long hours, but so do I (I'm averaging 80 hours a week now and I DON'T get summers off)

Oh and I think Lady Gaga is a freak! I mean who wears meat?  I'd be afraid of catching ecoli or some other bacterial infection.  YUCK!

  • I don't really know what the "popular" opinion is when it comes to building a mosque near ground zero, but I don't see anything wrong with it.

My religious views are not the norm. I believe we live multiple lives in which we learn a lesson we need to know before we are allowed to have eternal rest. To be honest I haven't even figured out all my religious views b/c I just do, feel, and believe what feels right to me. I don't believe in organized religion (I was brought up going to church every week), but I don't hold anything against those who do. I don't put very much stock in the Bible b/c it was written by men and edited by the Catholic church.

Oh and as a daughter of a firefighter I can tell you first hand that public service jobs (at least in my hometown) don't pay enough for what those people are doing my family got by okay, but my parents lived paycheck to paycheck for 29 years. If you don't know a firefighter or cop closely (and even if you do they usually don't tell you a lot of what goes on) you really wouldn't realize how dangerous their jobs are. My mom still can't watch Backdraft, Ladder 49 or any of those b/c it was so real to her. There's also more stuff going on than just the pay, there's also the pention, vacation time, sick days, short-term disability that the city is always trying to nickel and dime them for and doing whatever they can to not pay them all that should. *steps of soap-box*

Just to defend teachers a bit, they don't exactly "get summers off".  That kind of like telling someone who just got laid off that they now get to "take time off".  Yes, you don't have to go to work, but you also don't get paid.  At least some teachers don't.  My Mom doesn't get paid during the summer so she gets a summer job where she actually works more than when she's in school, especially now that they've gone to 4 day school weeks (complete with a huge pay cut).

I guess it's different all over.  I know my friends who are teachers brag that they get 'paid summers off' on their facebook but then complain when they have to go back to work.  They also complain when they only get a 2 hour delday and school isn't cancelled (which they still get paid for).  Like I said, I guess it's different all over, but I don't see the point in their complaining.

I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions, no matter how unpopular they may be.

I feel kinda the same way.  Usually I try not to get too in depth or riled up when someone else has a vastly different opinion than I do.  I don't like to rock the boat I guess.

Plus, I'm really big on "shades of gray" and can off the top of my head only think of one issue that I see as "black and white".   Sometimes I wonder if my playing devil's advocate is mistaken for an actual opinion.  :)

Katie, I'm intrigued to know the one issue you see as "black & white"!

It's hard to know what exactly is an unpopular opinion because those who are most vocal are not always the majority opinion. But, I would probably say my strongest "unpopular opinion" is regarding religion. I'm also a huge supporter of LGBT issues/rights. And I think marijuana should be legalized.

I didn't want to start a debate that's why the post is unpopular options.

That being said, my mom is a teacher.  She makes what I would consider to be a competitive salary.  PLUS very good benefits and retirement.  How many of us can say we will be getting an employer payed/supplemented retirement?  Very, very few, I would guess.  Sure salary and days worked vary school district to school district but here teachers work 190 days.  I figure that to be at least 50 days less than most of us including holidays, vacation and sick days. Also, you can select if you want your pay to be spread out over the full 12 months or just during the school year. The complaining in Tracy's post is what really drives me nuts.

Jaye - Maybe where your mom teaches they are very poorly paid or acting pays bank and I'm way out of touch.

Natalie - I'll agree the benefit does not equal the risk.  However the firefighters I know, work 6 days a month.  I place an extremely high value on being able to spend that much time with your family instead of working to support them.  And again, I'm sure pay is regional but I know of two supporting families of 4 on one income.  I know very few families living on one income.

  • Well GEE if you're going to be THAT way...I guess I'll post something Stick out tongue

My one black and white issue is that I'm for the death penalty when it comes to brutal murders of children, especially when rape is involved.  In general I have a hard time stomaching the death penalty, but in cases like that I think it's more than fair for it to be explored.

Thanks for sharing, Katie. I'm generally not for the death penalty myself for various reasons, but I'd lean toward your stance regarding those offenders.

My Mom makes $12,000/year and I was making close to $50,000/year back in 2005-2007 (before the strike).  Even if you consider she makes $12,000/year for 12 months that's only $1,000/ month (but how she gets paid is every two weeks and only during the school year, not at all during the summer).  Were she single I have no idea how she'd survive.

. Ok, well that's just beyond ridiculous. Teachers in my county start at $40,000. My Mom has been teacher in the same county for 32 years and obviously makes a lot more than that.

  • I should clarify that my Mom is a special ed teacher and only has 5 students.  Though, IMO, special ed should mean more money but that's just not how things work, I guess.  Though I know traditional teachers in her district don't make too much more (maybe $20,000 max).  It's ridiculous up there.  I know cost of living is pretty cheap but not *that* cheap!

I actually remember my senior year of high school I volunteered as a receptionist at a crisis nursery and they offered me the full-time paid position from that (I turned it down because I was going to college) and they offered me $19,000/year.  My Mom couldn't believe her daughter who didn't even have a high school degree yet was offered a job where she'd get paid more.

  • Somehow I missed this post.

I would have to say Religion, I find I have to bite my tongue a lot on this subject.
