Vibes and suggestions please!

Hey all, I could use some good thoughts for my SIL.  She's 19 & a sophomore( I guess, she took a semester at one school, then a couple at community college, & is now at a different state school).  Anyways, her current roommate is a "friend" of hers from home & I guess lately things have been pretty bad between them.  This "friend" doesn't like SIL's boyfriend of 2 years, got drunk & decided to tell SIL off about it.  "he's a fat loser and you're only with him cause he tried to kill himself last year."  Needless to say SIL is heartbroken.  She's questioning everything about school, wants to come home, go back to com. college & reevaluate things to get back in a positive place.  Problem is she has to finish the semester out with this jerk.

I want to send her a care package to cheer her up & give her that push to finish strong.  I just don't quite know what to put in it.  I was thinking some nice bath stuff/lotion, some kind of baked goody (I am a huge baker-but need some ideas on what to send) maybe a gift card to go out & get away from roomie, a nice card.  I dunno, what am I missing?  suggestions please!  Thanks everyone!

  • Poor girl! Bad roommate situations seriously suck. UGH.

Def. make sure there is some kind of chocolate in the cookie! I think good ol chocolate chip cookies are very comforting.

If you wanted to give her a gift card, maybe a good idea would be for a coffee shop or somewhere to eat like Panera Bread. That way she can get out away from the roommate but it's a place that you can bring your laptop/school things and relax, study, breathe. Those places usually have comfortable chairs/atmosphere and no one looks at you weird when you hang out for hours.

  • Ick.  I feel for her.  I've had my fair share of bad roommate experiences.

Do you know what any of her hobbies are?  A gift card for something she'd like to spend time doing might be nice.  (I'm thinking like a craft store gc if she's into that, sporting goods store if she likes to work out, etc).  Otherwise something to get her out of the house and having fun would be good like movie passes or something.

Chocolate is always good.  Or anything you know might remind her of home/how much she is loved.  My mom sent me chocolate chip cookies when I was blue in college because they're associated with good memories from home.

I also always loved it when my mom sent me a funny comic from the paper that she knew I'd like.  It's always good to laugh, right?

Whatever you send her, don't forget to remind her that you're cheering her on.  Encouragement goes a long way.  :)

  • Poor thing! What a horrible thing to say to a person. I would definitely go with some sort of happy comfort food. I always appreciated that. Oh also, can't go wrong with Halloween candy and a really nice personal cheer up card.
