How do you handle...

How do you handle it when you want to do something that DH doesn't want to do, or vice-versa, when it's a situation where you have to do it together?  (So one can't go alone and make both people happy, etc.)

Do you take turns with who "gets their way" so to speak?
Do you talk it out and lay out pros/cons?
Does one person just suck it up and go/don't go to please the other?

What's the best way you've found to handle it?

(And don't tell me this never happens to you because then I might just punch you, lol!!)   :-P

  • I would say for the most part we just suck it up and go anyway.

  • it is going to depend on the situation for us. some stuff one if us is going to have to suck it up and go along...other times it'll be a go it alone thing.

  • We normally just go.  The truth is if he wants me to go, I go.  He doesn't ask for much and it is the least I can do.  And if I want him to go and he doesn't want to he doesn't really tell and he just goes.  It is normally a non issue.  And if he really doesn't want to go and has a good reason (worked extra long day, has to study or has to work early) then I might go by myself or not at all.  Just depends.
  • We're usually pretty lopsided on this as there are a lot more things I do with/for him that I could care less about.  There's no real discussion about it...I just suck it up and go.

So when it comes time to me wanting to do things and I want him to come, I just say hey this is what we're doing.  If he complains in the slightest I remind him of the times I do things with him.  He usually shuts up pretty quickly at that point.

  • pretty much i just do what he wants to shut him up and still hear we never do anything he wants.

and i dont ask him to do things with me

  • I can't really think of a time we came across this sort of situation but I'd say we both just suck it up and go for each other.

  • We usually just talk it out and then compromise - usually, both of us end up making some kind of compromise with the situation, depending on what it is.
  • Depends on what it is. One of us usually just sucks it up and goes along with the other one.

  • Generally we just suck it up and go, though there isnt much that one of us does that the other doesnt want to do. I will say it is easier for me to say no to doing stuff since Monk came....I will just say "oh I dont know if monk will do well doing that, but you go ahead and go" . I am terrible...

  • If we HAVE to go together, we put on a smile and just go, for the sake of the other person if nothing else.  And typically, when one of us "drags" the other to something, we try not to stay too long...make an appearance, talk to the right people, say our hellos then take off with some lame excuse.  And we usually make a playful "deal" before hand - something like, "If I go to this, you cook dinner tomorrow" or "If  I go, you have to give me a 20 minute backrub when we get home"...stuff like that.

These are the things that I believe are not worth bickering over, just roll with it.  Typically, even when I don't feel like going and go anyhow, I have a good time and it's never as "bad" as I thought it would be.
