DH and I are hopefully going tomorrow morning to get our passports. We were planning on showing up here: http://www.co.travis.tx.us/district_clerk/passport.asp
does this seem right? there are lots of places online that seem odd...
we are brining: photo ID, check book, credit cards, birth certificates.
anything else I need to know??
Re: passport help
we've never had passports before.
good idea on the marriage license.
we don't have a printer at home... will we be able to fill them out there, or do we have to have them pre-filled out?

when we went to get ours done the camera wasnt working at the passport office. so we had to run to walgreens to get our pics done, and if Im not mistaken it was actually cheaper then it would have costed. Just make sure they meet the criteria set for the passports. We went to the downtown post office, got in and out pretty quickly.
You do have to write out a check for the passports, the processing fee you can use a card for though.
You definitely need your marriage license in addition to your birth certificate.

I don't remember the actual passport place taking photos for you - but, I've never renewed mine in TX so I'm not sure if it's done differently here. and I'm sure they'll overcharge for the convenience factor if they do offer it onsite.
We've always had to get photos taken elsewhere. I think you can get them done at most drugstores and Kinko's.
ETA: if you are renewing, you can ask them for your old passport back if you send yours by mail. I was sad to give that up b/c of the travel memories and the govt. just put a hole through my old one and sent it back to me. I just wrote a note asking if I could keep it.
ETA II: just saw that you have not has a passport before, but maybe the above is useful to someone else renewing soon.
Got my old passport back without asking, so I think it might be standard operating procedure.
I did my photo at Costco, it's like $5. (Costco should be paying me something today, I am recommending them left and right!)
Did the forms online and mailed them in, you can save the forms on a thumb drive and take it to kinkos to print.
It's a lot easier than you think, just follow the instructions.
thanks everyone. we were totally successful on our first trip to the passport office. We went to the place of airport (same building we got our marriage license, actually) and it was easy.
we brought our birth certificates, IDs, and marriage license and that was all we needed. They did the photos there (for a charge, of course), and they said they didn't even need the ML because I had already changed my SS card (that they didn't need to see).
Hopefully in 4-6 weeks they'll be at the door and the packing for our trip will begin!!
thanks again for your help!
