Residue on Iron... Need Cleaning Help!

While doing some ironing today, I discovered a residue on my iron that looks like a mix between clothing fibers and sticky residue from either the spray starch or something else. Any suggestions on how to clean this off? I really can't iron again until I can get it clean and I would love to not have to buy a new iron. Any help or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks! Smile

Re: Residue on Iron... Need Cleaning Help!

  • I have heard that if you iron a piece of aluminum foil it helps get the stuff off. Haven't tried it yet though. Hope it works!!

  • I used to buy something in a tube just for cleaning your iron. I think I purchased it at Joann's Fabrics or somewhere similar, somewhere that sells fabric. It's just a start buildup from the sound of it.
  • Another idea is by setting your iron to low and running it over a dryer sheet. It should get the gunk off. I just saw that one on the Real Simple website that everyone is raving about!

  • Rowenta makes a "Hot Iron Cleaner" which I have bought at JoAnns.  It works great for getting all kinds of icky messes off of your iron.  I am interested in trying the dryer sheet method though...
  • S.O.S. pads.. or if you don't want to try metal-on-metal, find a plastic alternative. Works great for curling irons too.

  • Good post, DH does all of his own ironing (I never do it right) and he was just complaining the other day about this crud stuff on the iron.  Thanks!
