How much prep do you put into your story?

We still have 16 days to put our ideas down on paper.  How much effort do you put into planning your story?  Do you have a solid plan right now or do you just have a general idea on where you might go?

I've never done good at outlining my writing and Nano is no different.  My plan this year is to flesh out my characters and maybe think about a few pivotal, early scenes.  We'll see how far that gets me.  At least I feel like I'll actually be able to finish this time.

Re: How much prep do you put into your story?

  • I have a general idea, but that's about it. I'm trying to figure out my characters, but I'm not having much luck with their names.

  • The last 2 years I have pantsed it.  And the resulting work has been a mess.  This year I am doing some basic outlining so that I have my major plot points mapped out and a good idea of who my characters are.  I have a one-sentence summary for the story written, and I've put together a collage to give me a nice visual representation of my story.

  • Right now I have an outline following the snowflake method. I'm working on my character bio page things now, i've got the 4 main characters finished. I'm trying to not over think it, but I'm scared to not have enough planning done before I start.

  • I'm not outlining but my FMC is telling me her version of the story and revealing the backstory to me as I'm doing her character development.  I'm also taking this opportunity to take out some of my frustration on the Mets with my villain.  lol

His name is going to be Manny Oliver and that's about as much as I know about him at this point.

  • I had a brief outline but spent the weekend plotting it out a bit more and coming up with a detailed plot using Excel. I'm also doing some more character developement now. I figure I will let the characters become themselves as a write some but I need a base to start with.

  • I have my whole story outlined by chapter and then by scene, including a target word count for each scene. Last year I didn't plan out my ending and after a year of edits the story still doesn't have a solid ending that I'm happy with, so this year I'm not taking any chances.

I also tend to under-write, so the word counts will help me with that.

  • I'm just going to wing it.  I've tried sitting down to outline my story, but it just feels overwhelming to me.
