follow up - moving to NC

Okay, I'm back A few weeks ago I posted that we may be moving from Northern VA to the Raleigh area. DH interviewed for the position and its looking like this might actually happen but they'd like us to live closer to Fayetteville where the main office is. Which areas south of Raleigh should we look at? Is Fayetteville nice or are there good areas to look in between Fayetteville and Raleigh? We want a suburban area, access to stores, things to do and not too rural of an area...

I am not really sure if there is a whole lot going on between Fayetteville and Raleigh. I think most of it is pretty rural. I do not spend a ton of time in that area, so someone correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not sure how far the exact travel times would be, but you could check out Sanford and Fuquay Varina (or parts of Harnett County).

My in-laws live in Sanford, which is probably the "biggest" city you'll find between the two. It's about a half hour from Raleigh (depending on what part of Raleigh and what part of Sanford), but can be up to an hour to Fayetteville. I've driven from the east side of Durham (where I work) through Raleigh to my in-laws on the Raleigh side of Sanford in about 45 minutes (if even that long).

I haven't been in Fayetteville much, but the couple times I have been there.. I have wanted to leave pretty quickly.

A friend of mine from college taught in Fayetteville and left this year. She said it was too rural for her. The area is nice but you have to know what you are getting into. My cousin lives outside Durham I am not sure the area but she is a doctor at UNCC and is unhappy with her location also thinks its too rural. My suggestion would be to check out the areas to see what fits for you guys before signing a lease.

I don't know if it is "known" for crime. I think it's more "known" for a military town. I do know they have their fair share of crime, but you could look it up online.

I have not met one person who has lived or worked in Fayetteville that likes that area.

I know quite a few people who live in Raleigh and commute to Fayetteville however.

Previous posts are pretty much accurate.. I grew up in Fayetteville.. My mom is still there, so i go back very often.. There is not much to do in Fayetteville as far as maybe plays or bands coming often.. If you like to shop, they dont have much of shopping as compared to Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte and other places..They have a smaller mall with a lot of the stores selling the same items..There are clubs there and that is pretty much what you will find..It is majority military and the city is growing that it is taking forever to get places..Places tha probably would take you normally in the past 15 mins to get to may take 25 to get to now.. As far as crime, its like any other city, there is crime and it does have certain areas that I would stay from choosing to live on.. Fuquay Varina is pretty awesome )

DH and I have been here for almost 1.5 years. It's about 30 mins from Downtown Raleigh and about 30mins - 1 hr from Fay.

There are two parts of downtown Fuquay that are very cute and have a lot of things going on all of the time!. We're also 30 mins from Apex (shopping center) and Cary (another shopping center)

I like it because it's quiet and peaceful / safe feeling, but not too far away from big city life!

Personally, most of the small towns mentioned above would fall into the "too rural" category for me, I wouldn't consider them suburban. I'm not saying they aren't cute or without charm, but they don't offer a whole lot on the restaurant/shopping front. I feel like they are the kind of places where people remember, with fondness, when they got a Wal Mart.

I tend to agree with this comment. I used to live in Northern VA and the suburbs there are very different from the surrounding towns of Raleigh. We decided to live actually in Raleigh to get that suburb feel because the surrounding towns were too rural for me.

I'm not familiar with Fayetteville at all, but I will caution you that I'm surprised how rural some of NC's towns are. I would highly recommend coming down for a visit when things are closer to being finalized with DH. That will help you get a sense of these different areas and be able to pick where is right for you!
