Help me! New england destinations

What are some cool places in New England to visit. Yes, i live here, but we never travel. We like places with fun stuff to do and pretty scenery.

Here's our list so far

- Vermont (up by Ben&Jerry's)

- Pennsylvania (Hershey area)

- Newport, RI

We're trying to figure out where to go this weekend.

  • What about Portland, ME? they have a food/wine event this weekend

You could do Bar Harbor, ME/Acadia National Park. But that might be a bit of a haul. Not sure how far of drive you want to do.

Or Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. It's not their peak season but it might be nice that it's quite.

What about Salem, MA?! It's super fun close to Halloween - lots of good people watching!

  • In Vermont, the Quechee Gorge is beautiful, and driving around the area is so nice.

NH- the Lakes region and the White Mountains are always great.

Boston is always a great time, either spending the day walking around sightseeing, or going at night for dinner.

I would pick up a magazine at one of the tourist centers- that will give you a lot of ideas. You can also look on each state's tourism website, and a lot of times you can search for things to do based on location or type of activity.

  • What about Lake George, NY or the Finger Lakes region of NY.  Lake George is my absolute favorite!  There are great little towns, places to hike and explore, and wineries!

  • I was going to suggest the Palisades area of NY, it's like 45 mins from Manhattan.  Our best friends got engaged up there [on a hike] 2 weekends ago and he surprised her afterwards with a night at the Castle on the Hudson.  She said it was beautiful, and they're actually looking to have their wedding up in that area in October 2011.  I don't think it would be too far of a drive from CT.

Ditto Benmel, the Finger Lakes are also beautiful.  In college we were in the same conference as Wells College, and I loved having meets up there.  Their fieldhouse sat up ontop the hill overlooking one of the lakes, and you could look out of the pool deck windows and see everything.  Gorgeous in the fall!
