Best way to clean a carpet?

We just cleared out the room we'll use for a nursery and I want to clean the carpet. Do I need to have DH rent one of those steamer things? Is there something we can do on our own that's not so $$$ and fairly easy? It's a pretty small room, too.

Re: Best way to clean a carpet?

  • One question... does the carpet actually need to be cleaned (spots or stained) or does it just need freshened?

If the carpet isn't actually "dirty" and just needs freshening up, sprinkle some baking soda around the room, let it sit for awhile to absorb any odors and then vacuum it up. If there's just a few spots here and there, try treating just the spots instead of the entire carpet.

Steam cleaning is actually not great for carpets. Once you start, you'll end up having to clean them at least once a year. The cleaners are harsh and can break down the carpet fibers and if you don't do at least one full rinse after cleaning you get soap residue left in the carpet which attracts dirt and makes the carpets dirty faster. I've seen people end up cleaning their carpets once every 6 months or more often once they start steam cleaning.

  • If it is dirty, or there have been animals in the room, I would have it steam cleaned. There is going to be an infant in that room, and I am fussy about those sort of things.I have my carpets cleaned once a year, and I have never had a problem with the carpet wearing out. I replaced my living room carpet last year-it was 15 years old, and looked terrific--I was just sick of looking at it.A reputable steam cleaning company will do a good job, and its not really that expensive.
