Wtf was that?

I have my first observation tomorrow, and had my pre-observation conference this afternoon.  I walked out of the meeting and thought to myself "wtf just happened there?"

The administrator asked me to describe what they'd see in the lesson.  So I started describing it and I stated how I end each day with sightreading to improve those skills, and said administrator then went into a 10 minute discussion/grill session on "well, how do you know they're REALLY sight-reading," and "you should see these new music stands that cost $600 each and are really just mini-computers in the shape of music stands." uh, ok...

THEN, said administrator goes into a 10 minute discussion on "well, how do you successfully recruit?  What do you REALLY need to be doing?"  Um...yeah.  Teacher relationship with students and success.  The kids need to WANT to be there.   But why are we talking about this during my pre-observation?  I'm well aware that you want me to build numbers in the program.  I get that.  But how is this relevant to my observation tomorrow?  I've already told you about the kids and the relationships I've built with them and what you can expect to see.  Why are we talking about recruitment in such a veiled way?  My numbers in the 7th grade chorus have gone up, not down, and while 6th grade has dropped, the majority of the ones that did never even showed up on day 1!  So I'm really quite confused.

Seriously, wtf was that?

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.

Re: Wtf was that?

  • That sounds frustrating.  It seems as though the admin tried to sneak in a different topic into your conference.  However, now the admin has taken your focus away from your lesson and moved it to a different concern.

My advice is to stayed focused on your lesson for tomorrow.  If the recruitment topic comes up again, see if you can politely bring it back to the observation and even offer to meet another time about the other issues.  Good luck tomorrow!
